DVL players have an internal control port - substance had/has a player with a serial board. If the pinouts and voltages were known a USB serial adapter could easily be made.

Anyone got details on what ribbon, pinout, and voltages are used? And if the control params only work on the DVD side? Thanks.

I could be wrong, but I would imagine that that port is for firmware updates.

Duncan at Bayview Electronics (before he went rogue) did a firmware update for a DVL-700 that I sent him for work, and it made the comb filter in it adjustable.

This is a 7 pin connector on the DVDM board CN106 and is listed as RS232C, so it "should" comply with standard serial protocols and voltages. It's on the edge of the board between the two cables that go down to the CLDM board.

1 - NC
2 - GND
3 - +5v
4 - CTS
5 - DTR
6 - RXD
7 - TXD

One of my 919E boards has a little fob in this port that makes it region free. If I remove the fob, the player reverts to its original region coding.

Just a thought, but if you connected that 'fob' to a serial to USB adapter (a TTL level one like the arduino's use) and connected it to a PC, then connected the +5V, it would fire up and you could read out the commands it's using to do the region free trick... then you could publish the codes required here (or make more dongles and sell them as gold bars :) ).

Either way you would then know the serial speed/settings and at least a few of the available commands.

I too am interested in this serial dongle; I'm trying to get my USA 919 to play some region 2 PAL DVDs I have... Blam1, any chance you have an oscilloscope with serial port decoding to grab the commands from it?

I did find this interesting little tidbit in the service manual, but changing that link had no effect for me... I tried it in combination with the 909 solder bridge and the usual DISPLAY remote trick to no avail.

I also did try a serial-to-USB cable wired to that port, no luck either. I was hoping it might output something but it does not appear to, I see no signs of any activity with an oscilloscope.
