first, you should clean your video out port.

Thanks for the advice! I tried both outputs on the player plus tried playing it on multiple TVs now. It looks identical either way I try it.

Is the blue screen also unstable like that when the player is stopped?

Not at all, if I stop or pause, the text on the blue screen is perfectly crisp and there are not distortions on the blue itself. However, once a movie starts playing, if I bring up the display text then, it is distorted just like the movie.

Does this problem get a lot better with a CAV disc?

Same with a CAV disc. I've tried 3 movies so far, same with all of them. I don't see any signs of rot on the actual discs.

Even if you had the best eyes in the world you will never physically see any rot on a disc.

Unless it's really bad. Like all those brown blotches on badly rotted CD Video discs.

That's still not technically "laser rot"

Its an issue but again Not Rot.

How does the disc sound? Do you hear crackling / audio dropouts or does it sound normal? If this is a combi player (you never did mention the model you have; that would be helpful), does it play CD’s fine?

Apologies, it's the Pioneer CLD-M90. I haven't tried CD's on it yet, but the audio sounded fine on the laserdisc from what I could tell. No static or anything out of the ordinary.

Only time I ever saw noise like that was either rot or bad cable.
Don't forget, the outside of the RCA connector is ground the inside also needs to be cleaned.

Deoxit is the best to do so.

I don't feel the issue is a bad cable or even a cold solder on the video outputs since if that was the case the bluescreen during stop would be showing the same issue as well. (Forgot to ask as I was writing this; does the video output that is part of the RF mod adapter showing the same issue. Check this before reading the rest of this post and let us know.)

I also don't think the issue has anything to do w/ the laser focus or alignment since it clearly can play the disc w/o issue and the sound quality appears normal.

That leaves the video circuitry as being the main focus right now. Here is a pic from my player showing the various pots that involve the video section (located on the main board; the one that is on the bottom).

Image

If you're willing to experiment, take a picture of these pots on "your machine" before messing with them so you have a reference point as to where they were before you started.

The "four" pots that are all circled together I believe involve the focus and tracking and I would "not" touch those (at least for now). What you want to do is have your disc playing and move the other pots I highlighted in either direction about 1/8 a turn and observe if you see a change. If no changes, move it back to their original position and then do the same for the others.

This may not do anything but then again you never know. It's a start. If you get no changes at all, I would then start checking for ribbon cables as from time to time they will need to be re-seated if they have any condensation build up that could be affecting the signal going through the wires (it could also be colder solder joints that you can look for @ the plug ends on the board side).

Maybe Kurtis could also provide some input since he's definitely more experienced than me on this sort of thing.

Good luck

He needs to try a CD as analog audio can work with low RF levels. If cleaning the laser lens when you have it open doesn’t help then you either have a weak laser output or you have 3 Laserdiscs with laserrot.

If it cannot play a CD then the RF level is weak.

Well, that was a nice learning experience on what those little guys actually do! Unfortunately, it did not resolve the issue. However, my frustration has given a clue! I slapped down on the top of the machine, and the picture went crystal clear before going back to static. After seeing that, I tried it again...again, crystal clear for a second, then gradually back to static over a few seconds. Any thoughts given that new info?

So you pressed down on what part of the mechanism?

I did have a warped Gamma Turn mechanism on my 704 that did cause tracking issues awhile back and bending it back into alignment did fix it. Does the chassis look crooked on anywhere in the machine?

I'll need to inspect everything thoroughly to see if anything looks tilted a bit. The slap was with everything actually assembled and the case back on. Just slapped down on top of the metal case, and it went clear for a second. Tried it again, did the same. I'll give it a good look in the morning. Thanks for all the help so far!
