I just picked up a DVD copy of Nothing But Trouble and see on the back that it is listed as a standard version and formatted to fit your screen.
So it seems that its a pan and scan from 1.85 but the LD is too the same.

The LD seems to be the same pan and scan Nothing But Trouble (1991) [12068]

From what I've searched there isn't any widescreen version of this on any format. I wonder if there is some type of Shout Factory release to come soon?

Thanks for that, I wonder if the USA DVD and LD are really open matte?

I watched Xanadu (1980) [17006] the other night matted to 16:9 by my TV. It looked perfect everywhere but the animated sequence so I don’t know what I’m dealing with. RIP Disclord, who I’m sure could have set me straight on that.

Then yesterday I found the OST in a record store and got it. They were very nice sequencing it, having an ELO side and an ONJ side. I can think of a lot of OSTs where they should have done something like that.

This is one of my favorite films of all time. I have it on LD and DVD (and even the CD soundtrack).

I haven't watched the LD in a while, but the USA DVD appears to be open matte in comparison to Amazon's digital (1.78?) version.

Depending on platform Amazon shows basically everything wide. Even The Dukes of Hazard.

We have OTA and they broadcast some older TV in 1.78 too.
Its just ridiculous that we had everything cut on the sides when using 4x3 TVs and now everything is cut on the top and bottom when using 16x9

I sort of forgot about this film and when I saw the DVD for 2 bucks I decided to get it.
Crazy and fun but then not really all at the same time.
But will watch it again in the future.

It’s even worse, honestly, than the pan and scan days. Most of the time you weren’t conscious of missing the sides and the transfers were done semi manually with at least half-assed pros most of the time. However it’s almost impossible to be unaware that something square is cropped to wide when you go through whole episode without seeing someone’s hair! Old TV usually used the whole screen all the time because TVs were crap back then so there’s nothing that can be sacrificed in any of it. People’s being cutoff at the eyebrows is something that’s just going to happen due to the fact that most of film and TV history has a lot of stuff where people’s (not wide) heads fill the frame almost completely. In medium and long shots people lose their heads or disappear completely somethimes. Making all of this worse is when the stuff was shot on video the resolution being reduced by a 1/3 doesn’t help when stretching it to 80” or whatever. I bought that Emmet Otter DVD in 2015 because it had Kermit cut back into it but it’s cropped and almost unwatchable. I’m glad I have the earlier release. In the 2015 one Kermit actually points and references a sign that is half cut off by cropping.

I avoid most of this by watching things on discs a lot. :)

With Prime on a Mac in Safari things show at the correct ratio in a window but if you hit full screen it crops it to fit the screen. So your choice is overly cropped or a screen with a menu bar and icons and crap all around it.

I was unaware of the (what appears to be rampant) butchering in digital copies. I purchased the digital copy just to see. Oh well. There goes ~$12 that I could have spent on LDs...

I would much rather have an open matte than a cropped for digital release.

I agree 100%. It is sad that it is cropped, because the picture quality of the digital release is much better than the DVD.

I need to watch the LD again soon and see how it compares to the DVD. They are probably very similar.

I was reminded of this silly movie I saw as a kid in the theatre after seeing this thread. Ironically, I found a sealed DVD copy for $2 at the local thrift shop a few days later so I picked it up. This is a WB snap case from 1998.

Watching this on a 16:9 display in zoom mode (like LD) the AR looks correct as does the framing. Wide shots of the mansion and medium 2 shots seem correct. If this is the same case on the LD then I'd agree that its probably open matte. I feel like some shots might be giving actors a haircut but watching in full screen there is sometimes too much headroom. Even the credit titles at the end of the movie for the main cast are framed correctly. Perfectly enjoyable zoomed in.

On a side note the song playing when the Digital Underground drives in (~51 minutes) sounds exactly like Daft Punk's "Get Lucky".

I also found this hilarious review of the DVD:

Thanks for reminding me about this ridiculous film.

I've watched numerous times but I have never found it funny though it is a popcorn flick. I love demi moore and thinks she's hot but first time I saw it I didn't realize it was her. I wouldn't mind seeing this in widescreen but I am kinda tired of it.

I purchased a R2 release from 2006 of this with 1.85 labeled on the back. It looks like the DVD was matted.

So then the US DVD and LD are more likely open matte and one could zoom in to get the same 1.85 or close to matted.

Yes ineed. Sonicboom got it spot on with his above post. The digital HD version looks to be 1.78. There is just a minuscule amount of picture removed.

Pretty amazing, I was just guessing about a shout factory release back in 2018, just figured that it was so cult that no regular company would
bother to release it.

While I'm happy enough with my DVD that I asked about when I picked it up in 2018 I'm glad this whackball film will be for others to keep enjoying for
years to come.
