I have an APD-2 but I'm thinking of buying a Pioneer decoder. Is the APD-2 enough to work in tandem with my existing AV setup, or is a full-fat decoder a good investment? Mainly for AC-3, but also for Dolby Digital and DTS. I'm more interested in if decoder is better over a modulator when I go to digitise my collection.

If you must have AC-3 then the best thing to get are the stand alone pieces.

What you have is good enough, if you want to get one of the decoders that has all the inputs and outputs then piggyback that into a larger AV then fine.

But you are just going to be buying the same things in different shapes.

Perfect. That's more or less the answer I was looking for. I'm keen to have AC-3 because a couple of discs I have it has different features on different soundtracks on the disc so I want access to them all. Thank you.

So you don't need an AC3 decoder, just the demodulator?

No Decoder/demodulator to my knowledge are the same things just different names.

Its been a while I think Ted was asking about the decoder demodulator being built into an integrated amp or buying just the box decoder/demodulator.

A demodulator only takes RF modulated DD and converts it to standard DD over TOSLINK or coax.

A decoder takes the DD signal apart and sends it to the different amplifiers. In the old days this would have been a unit with six analog outs that went to six analog ins on your receiver.

The ADP303 from Harmon Kardon did both.

These days everything but the demodulation is built into every TV and receiver and almost nothing made now for home used has six analog ins.

If you already have the Demodulator, there is no need for a full blown Pre-Amp Processor / Decoder. It won't make a difference based on what you want to do in respect to converting your collection.

The only real advantage to a Pre-Amp Processor / Decoder (especially w/ the optical output) is to use it as a switcher before your AV Receiver to simply make switching between different audio formats more convenient (Dolby Digital, DTS/PCM, and Analog). That's how I have mine set-up right now.

Only devices I found to act purely as AC3RF+DD+DTS pre-amps are (so far):

Roksan Caspian DSP
Parasound P/DD-1550
McIntosh MSD4
