Plasma used plenty of dithering too. Most panels had 6 bits color depth and the pulsating dithering noise was very apparent. The late Kuros were better than most for sure but the main issues were still there.

There are CRTs that are larger than 36" by the way, if that makes any sense.

Yeah, I had a Sony KV-40XBR800--an HD 40" Wega. Great set, but just insanely heavy.

Had to pay 1-800-GOTJUNK to take it away when it got the dreaded flashing red diode.

Yes I am aware of the 40” sets. That’s still tiny. I have a 65” at around 8’ it’s barely watchable. No I can’t watch tv in the closet to sit closer to a crt tv. Ideally 96” at around 8’ and 120-140” at around 10-12’ is ideal via a projector.

Cool, did it have "Super Hi Fine Pitch" mode?

I got a flashing red light on my KVHR36 and I had to replace one chip that controlled the start up and totally fixed it. Chip? $1. Working KVHR36? Priceless.

Nah, it wasn't a Super Fine Pitch Trinitron. Just a Hi-Scan.

I knew about the chip replacement, but I was able to find a Super Fine Pitch KD-36XS955 for free right after the 40" went flashing red.

Figured free was better than paying for fixing the 40"

I’m a weirdo because I’m buying the smallest TVs around. The smallest Bravia for the new basement (I think it’s 36-40”, something like that) area and the smallest TV I could find for the kitchen at 19”. I like movies but I also like my house, life, room to move, negative space in general, etc.

I guess I saw Back to the Future II first and it biased me. In that movie they have a 100” TV that completely dominates the entire living room and they are shown to be basically idiotic trash people. The TV helps sell it in several ways. Now that Biff is president and most people really have a TV that big it still just seems really really low and distopian. I mean, if you have a dedicated room or whatever that’s fine but I don’t even allow a TV at all in my main room. Once it’s there then that’s all that’s there. Some tool from CNN or The General and Shaq all shilling crap with their massive HD heads blown up to 8x their original sized. Revolting.

God I hate casual TV watching...

In case it isn’t obvious I’m STILL trapped at the in-laws place and I hate it. Last night I watched That’s Entertainment III with the color set to “Dynamic”. I really need to go home.

I'd say that the main issue with smaller sets aren't necessarily that the screen size itself is smaller. It is that there are very few models smaller than 48" rarely offer any decent value for the money considering that they usually offer rather poor options for calibration and tend to lack support for new features like HDR and Dolby Vision. Even on new models between 32 and 42", the panels themselves tend to be from earlier generations and aren't really worth bothering imho.

I can certainly see why some people prefer smaller sets, but when the sets themselves offer relatively bad bang for the buck nowadays I see no reason to buy them. In those cases I'd say either buy a larger TV that performs well or look for a decent PC monitor instead.

Ah, the General and Shaq selling car insurance LOL

My TV is a 32 inch and I haven't even finished my living room to put it in there, but I do agree about part of it, I don't need to see Shaq's head that large and clear.
I'll use my projector for movies etc. No OTA TV on large screen, no need.

I never watch TV. Only movies or animation (not on TV, but only on LD, DVD or BluRay).
My screens are not connected to any device allowing to watch channel. Don't want to be brainwashed.

Not unless you have a row of 50 Red Bull cans set up in a row on top of your display.

I think about how much I used to watch TV when I was a kid. 5-6 hours a day for years. TV was so good back then. I haven't had TV connected for probably 10 years. For the last 3 I don't even have a device that can get a signal. I recently stayed at someone's house and watched some TV. I got that old passive enterntainment feeling, which was nice but 50 channels, all complete BS. And I don't mean "broadcast satellite..." won't be hooking up TV anytime soon..

Just got a 60" Kuro from my brother (who got it from his boss, who upgraded to 4K.)

Haven't hooked it up yet, but I'll let you know how it is for LD. It's one of the later ones after Pioneer stopped manufacturing their own plasma screens and OEM'd from Panasonic. Truthfully, I don't think that will be too much of an issue. My current display is a Panasonic Plasma and LD looks great on it.

I actually had to get a computer monitor for my bedroom, because I couldn't find a TV small enough that was good enough quality for what I wanted. I just route everything through a DVDO Duo so there are no compatibility issues and I can use anything I would want to on it.

I don't connect my video game consoles to the internet* but this is even more hardcore. Though I believe in Japan, you have to pay for a tv license or some crap like that? A couple of my TVs are hooked up for over the air, but I almost never watch tv.

*Soon I won't be able to play modern games and I probably won't care too much.
