Has anyone recently imported a LD player from Japan? I have read previous posts here mentioning services, but a lot of the posts are 4-5 years old (mentioning services like Celga, that don't appear to be functional). Is fromjapan or zenmarket an option?

Ebay has players such as the S9, 959, and R7G, but even with shipping there appear to be better prices going straight to the source with a proxy. Any thoughts?

Your idea is correct, higher end players are MUCH cheaper from Japan, you can basically ignore any eBay price and listing on any of those. Personally I use Zenmarket, pay the extra 1000 yen for reinforced packing and FedEx for shipping and have not lost a player yet.

Yes, I also use Zenmarket. Their packaging is quite good with the reinforcement option.

I tried asking this in it's own thread but I guess I might as well ask here.

Can you hook up a Japanese player to a US socket without any extra power conversion? I have a Euro-to-US step down converter and I'm thinking about buying another LD player that's just come up for sale around here but it's a Japanese model and I'm wondering if I have to buy a new converter of I can just use the one I already have.

the plugs for Japan are almost the same as the US or are identical though I remember one piece of electronic I had the blades where a little thinner so it was looser and came out of the outlet easier than the normal thicker ones that you usually have to pull on the head but that item I think was a VCD player that came from somewhere else in Asia (I don't have it any more so I can't recall it correctly).

Edit as far as the power I think it would be wise to get some specific for it but it shouldn't hurt to much by using the US one.

From what I've read as long as its a newer non X0 X9 type player you should be OK.
Some of the players that I know of like the R7G have a 120 power supply inside even though it was made for the Japanese market, outside says 100.

I think S9 might be OK but not certain, older players may not be.
So check on that model or if you get it cheap enough you can pop it open to find out if the PSU is marked with what and then go from there.

It's a CLD-99S, and although my existing converter is supposed to be for US devices, it's rated at 110V rather than 120.

110-120 that's OK.
Others will answer but I don't know why we have 120 from the wall but our electronics are 110.
I guess they can deal with a fluctuation?? I saw it written before but am too lazy right now to search it up.

the 99S is slightly better made than it's U.S. 3030 variant. the 99S has a thicker, copper-plated bottom panel,
with the usual, deep-stamped PIONEER "Honeycomb Chassis" pattern, while the 3030 has a very flimsy, non-plated bottom panel,
with only the slightest, barely-there suggestion of the usual late-80's PIONEER Honeycomb anti-vibration pressing pattern in evidence.

also, the stock front polycarbonate isolator feet on the 99S are taller than those on the 3030.

that aside, i am unsure of any significant internal differences...

I want to figure and make clear.
If its for the Japanese market you may need to use a special adapter?
If its for the US market and marked 110 you are fine with your regular adapter.

I've never seen Japanese equipment with 110, usually 100v.
So double check everything, you don't want to toast the player.

That's the other problem, I tried looking for ones online but all the ones I could find are the same as the one I aleady have; they say 110V on the shell, but the website specs say it's 100~120V.

If I do buy it, I want to make sure it works right away instead of having it sitting under a bed in a box for a month or something while I try finding a new adapter, but I'd rather not start by accidentally frying it either.

I have a 115 V adapter that outputs 137 V when measured with a voltage meter, which is 37% more than japanese 100 V equipment expects to get.
So I bought a dedicated 100 V adapter, which outputs 101 V when I connect a voltage meter to it. Better play it safe. They are harder to find, that much is true.

I just took a multimeter to mine and it says about 112 so it's not that far off.

When I was looking for a 100v converter for a player that I found out I didn't need the converter.
I had to go to an electronics store, nothing on the internet had it and only a specialty store had them.

It was massive and had 110-220 step down to 100, all the switches and such.
I think it was around 40 or 60 bucks but its not as easy as the 110-220 deals.

If the back of that player is marked 110 then you are fine with your 112 but if its 100 I think you may get issues as that's an older player and I'm
not an electronics expert.

Older stuff sometimes gives you funky scenario when you don't use the correct electric.

The CDV players i bought a few years ago i purchased from Yahoo via Buyee proxy.
These CDV players are basically cd players but with added circuitry for video.
Nevertheless i ended up paying in some cases 150 euros for sending alone while the players only wou have cost me 20 bucks if i would have lived in Japan and picked it up myself.

I don't know about other proxies. I am a bit wary to use a different one.

I got an R7G from Japan via Celga (and they're still around: https://celga.com/ )

Just be prepared to probably pay as much if not more for the shipping and markup.

Still cheaper than getting it off of Ebay though.

Depending on how you measured it and the vintage 137VAC may be fine. Test it with a player plugged into it and running and see what it drops too. This is the nature of old school transformers...

To answer 666’s post, don’t waste your money if you already have a 240-110 converter. The difference between 120 and 110 and 100 is irrelevant. Most power supplies are manufactured exactly the same between US and JP. If you just bought a rare as hell high end turntable from the 70s that would be something different but disposing of an extra 10VAC is no problem for an LD player. It won’t even be measurable on the other side of the DC bus.

Thanks. I think I will buy it then, unless the seller has already found another buyer.

Buyee is a running a "no commission on Yahoo Auctions Japan" campaign starting today:

https://media.buyee.jp/campaign/auction1902_buyee/en/

Per the fee page, it's waiving the 5% commission on the final price, not the shipping + reshipping costs.

Interesting for a highly priced item.

Oh yeah, I should probably ask if this thing has a transit screw, or is that mostly just in two-sided players?
