Didn't Nobel just make it up to feel less guilty about inventing dynamite?

I like the part (sarcasm) where Obama won the peace prize for being elected president just for being black> the ultimate condescentian of a president elect. Typical European leftist elites, virtue signalling how good and noble they are while actually being blatantly racist by having lower expectations for minorities.

Alita: Battle Angel. ** out of *****, and that only because of preexisting affection for the character. Salazar was good, the Yuugo actor as I'd remembered the character's name was fair; nobody else stood out beyond the CGI.
Inferior look to the OVA, totally inferior soundtrack to the OVA, Gonze appears to have been SJW'd out for some generic black woman, and somehow a film twenty five years later and twice the length manages to tell a story with with less conviction, emotion, and information than a one-off cartoon. There was backstory the OVA hadn't, but at the expense of elements and characters (not counting Gonze) given in the OVA. The 3D was meek too.
Stick with the anime or the PSX game.

That movie couldn’t have have been less attractive to me. It seemed to do everything wrong possible from an aesthetic sense, that’s going beyond the notion that making a live action version of any anime at all is almost always totally missing the point.

Then there’s the question we’re all wondering...

When uncle James asked that question all uncool people ask when they see anime for the first time (that being, “Why are their eyes so big?”) what hilarious answer did his nephew give that Cameron didn’t realize was a joke? I want to know and I can’t reverse engineer a very good one.

Viewed "The Mission" with Jeremy Irons, Robert Duvall, and a very young Liam Nesson.
True story about Jesuit missionaries and the Portuguese conquest utilizing slavery to power the "machine".

Utterly epic and ultimately tragically sad epitaph of colonial struggle from the indigenous perspective.

Check it out !

Very well done period film gypsy, hard core theme from Jesuit perspective as well as indigenous.
Not a feel good movie, however. Is quite full of stark insights involving the struggle of the individual and reclamation, vs the pressure to conform to powerful forces outside oneself.

Masterpiece cinematic experience really......

Check out Silence (2016) for some good missionary action in Japan

Great film. I concur. The Mission is excellent, too, and quite different than Silence. Ennio Morricone's score is just extremely beautiful
and the cinematography superb. Robert de Niro was such a powerhouse back then playing all kind of roles in many good movies ( unlike nowadays ).
Last night I saw Midnight Run on Netflix for the very first time in my life. Excellent stuff and very funny.
I love The Mission and have seen it at least ten times in my life. Silence is excellent, too, but in a different way.

Hello all! New guy here.

Love "The Mission". Amazing film and the soundtrack is beautiful. A classic for sure.

The last couple laserdiscs I've watched these past few days are "The Last of the Mohicans", "Field of Dreams" and "Dragon Slayer".

I'm hoping I'll be able to see "Legend", "A Room with a View" and "Dances with Wolves" later this week before the end of the year.

Happy Holidays to all of you!

Just viewed "BLACKROBE"...
A French Jesuit film taking place in the 16oo's.
Fantastic experience emphasizing the life and death struggle during British and French colonial period conquering the native americans in the name of religion.

If you enjoyed dances with wolves, this Canadian period film is a must see.

Have been binge watching The Expanse on Amazon Prime with the wife. This is the 3rd sci-fi show she has been enjoying watching from beginning to end. The others were BSG and SG:Atlantis.

Some rank it the 2nd best sci fi show ever since BSG. Although I agree it’s very good, I wouldn’t rank it that high. First major issue is there are nearly no likable characters. Thomas Jane is very good always. Jay Hernandez had very little screen time. But these are secondary characters anyway. Actually the secondaries are very good to excellent on this show but the main characters are very weak.

I believe it is due to the lack of the talent of the casted actors or they were simply miscast. I like the pilot, amos is cool too but the other two are not convincing at all. There is no chemistry between them. I didn’t like the actors for starbuck or lee adama in BSG (2003) either but they were convincing and I could see why some other might like them.

I enjoy the show but I wouldn't say it's the best ever either. Probably top ten though in the 8-10 range. I actually read the books first as I am a pretty big reader. It's cliche to say they are better but it really is the case.

I am with you on your ranking. It really is good. It is a better show overall than Killjoys and Dark Matter (the other two heavy sci-fi shows in the air) but those two have much more likable characters. I don’t want to sound like complaining a lot though. I am grateful that we have these sci-fi shows. It was far worse a few years ago with nearly no heavy sci fi shows whatsoever.

The Expanse is pretty good. Haven't read the books so I can't comment about how accurate it is compared to the original material, but for modern sci-fi it is entertaining to watch.

Dark Matter was better than Killjoys imo though neither are great shows, not sure why the former got canned.

Altered Carbon is another interesting show, afaik it hasn't been cancelled but the only info I've seen about S2 release is like early 2020 (S1 was around the start of 2018 iirc).

Finished watching The Witcher last night.
