finished the final run of Orguss TV, gripping last few episodes, actually really started to care about the characters. I spotted the Arcadia in the final battle, cool easter egg that the internet doesn't seem to mention. The ending though??!! I now know why it's so controversial, I mean huhhhhhhhhh??? Need to see the Orguss Memorial discs and rewatch Orguss 02 now, saw it in the '90s at the anime club.

I'm preparing myself now for the great UC Gundam on LD experience where I watch it all from beginning to end..still need to track down some subs for Z and ZZ though..

Orguss 02 is terrific, but it doesn't really explain the ending of the original series in a way you couldn't figure out on your own already, and it's really more of a standalone thing.

Watching some DVDs I picked up.

Guilty confession time: When I'm too tired from all the s**t to get out of bed I watch new movies on my laptop, from, ahem, certain free sources...

I liked Mid90s, just for the older brothers room. MUCH better than that "Dopeness " movie or whatever that tried to rip off KIDS in a really try hard way..I always liked Jonah Hill, the only guy from the new "funny guys" I like at all.

Uncut Gems is really good, really creates this hectic tension in every scene as this guys life falls apart. Reminded me of my f***in luck the last few years

Highly recommend Once Upon a Time in Hollywood if you hate hippies like I do

Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan. Really nice and mostly accurate. Some reviews said the heroism was overblown, but no it's all pretty much exactly what actually happened. Kind of like how people didn't believe the last scene in Fury, even though Audie Murphy actually pulled it off in real life. Truth is stranger than fiction..

The NVA troops are way too heavily built/fat, in real life they lived off a pound of rice and some fish every day. the Aussies had a realistic mix of overweight and what today would be considered underweight (but for the '60s was normal and healthy, glamour muscles don't actually help you in a firefight) troops.

Weapons and combat were well done, although at one point an NVA soldier is firing an STG44, although these did get supplied to the North I seriously doubt a regular NVA unit like D445 Bn would have one. Also the sidearm that Major Smith uses at the end of the battle is a US issue Colt government, should be a Browning Hi Power.

Also there was very little attempt to be PC or "woke" like a lot of movies now. Although the dedication at the end is to ALL the troops that died at Long Tan, I felt it should have just been dedicated to the Aussies because the North Vietnamese were fighting for an evil cause, that once ultimately victorious, ruined the lives and murdered many many free Vietnamese people.

Yep, we WERE fighting for freedom. Sue me.

Want to see uncut gems and Once in Hollywood, will get them from the library as they should be there sooner, they do get newer stuff.

Haven't seen Fury, I believe I had a copy from the library once but didn't get to watch in time due to length, need to see that one.
Will look into Danger Close.

Terminator Dark Fate last night. It wasn’t bad at all in my opinion. I thought it was going to be really really bad. Action scenes are well worthy of the Terminator franchise. Linda Hamilton was legit bad a**. I think the story has some issues but passable in my opinion. Arnold was good and some jokes made me laughing really really hard but they didn’t feel out of place. It is worth a watch. And I think it is far less irritating that other modern remakes and sequels. Is it a good terminator movie? No and that was expected (and unfair to ask). Terminator movies main wow factor was being pioneering and groundbreaking in many cinema techniques and special effects technology. Dark fate offers nothing new on these. Until the next technology revolution in cinema I doubt any terminator film have the same effect as the original two films. Same goes for Jurassic Park, Toy Story, Tron, and many others

Hunter Killer - another movie with 2/5 star by reviews but I liked. I have a soft spot for films underwater and submarines.

A friend of mine recommended hunter killer when I asked him if he's seen crimson tide. That's on the to watch list.

One upon a time in Hollywood is so good I paid to see it twice!

I watched daylight dts edition last night. Not a terrible film but not a great film either. The dts however.. ear shattering. I followed that up with Dracula dead and loving it which unfortunately was rotten.

Fired up: Lost World, The: Jurassic Park (1997) [43310]

Had not seen for maybe ten years or more, was alot better than i remembered.
Holds up well.

LD quality was absolutely fantastic, well for my eyeballs anyway for LD.

Just viewed "Oblivion".....
Fairly good science fiction story with stunning visual effects and over the top soundtrack.

yeah, i just saw OBLIVION again myself a few weeks back, only the second time, actually.

it's really quite good, much better than i remembered, even.

that said, i picked up the new TERMINATOR 5 the other day,
and sat down to all the films sequentially, save for T3, which i saw once way back, and never bothered to pick up.

all told, T1 and T2 are evergreen classics that only seem to get better every time i see them. two of the best films ever made.

my mom actually took me, at the tender age of about nine, to T2 in the theaters in 1991.
it was an experience, capped off with both me and mom breaking down in tears at the end
devolving into a stupid popcorn fight during the credits.

today, the umpteenth viewing later, it remains every bit as powerful as that first time,
even more so, actually, IMO, in it's full-length, non-theatrical form.

indeed, that ending still manages to get my eyes misty, nearly 30 years on.

My God, what a Tight, TIGHT, film, and, very much the FINAL one, IMO,
as it brings such a powerful and complete sense of closure to the franchise.

T4/T5, well, those are, in the main, UNWELCOME ANOMALIES, IMO.

sure, they've their moments, -T5 most especially- but by and large, they all feel flat out wrong,
particularly after the bittersweet finality of T2...

I vaguely remember not finishing Oblivion, or maybe it was Elysium. A lot of newer scifi movies blurred together for me. I have it on BD, so there had to be something there that made me interested. My favorite newer sci-fi by miles has been Arrival. Her would be second, though it isn't strictly sci-fi.

If you can get past the contemporary social justice metaphor for our border/medical crisis, Elysium is a very good story.
I especially liked the role of the operative in charge of doing the skulduggery for the political arm of Elysium's ruling body. RE : KRUGER.....
Several facets of this yarn struck a chord for me, especially the profit driven executive, pressured to stay viable and produce profit at all cost necessary.
Visual effects were stunning and the CG fairly portrayed with realism.

I can overlook lame aspects that cropped up in the story and will keep them to myself as this post is not a critique.

I favored Oblivion over Elysium if I HAD to choose.....
Music score of Oblivion made that choice a no contest for this member.

I watched amistad on laserdisc last night. Never seen it before but i have to say it was an impressive film. A bit corny in places but after all it is a spielberg film. After making a successful film about the holocaust, I guess Spielberg wanted to replicate that success by tackling the subject of slavery. The film really holds up, great performances all round.

I was a little but disappointed with the pq for a 1999 release. I think the way the dp shot the film doesn't help with the transfer. A lot of high contrasts and deep blacks. I did watch it during the day in a room without curtains so it could fair better in the evening without any ambient light.

Definitely recommend it.

I spun cool world last night. I had never seen it before but have always been a fan of Bakshi's animation.

This film is absolute chaos from start to finish. All the random animation that fills the screen really brings a sense of anarchy and madness to this world.

The way hollie wood is animated is jaw dropping. Move over Jessica rabbit lol. You can tell the film is far removed from Bakshi's original vision. However what were left with is still a compelling piece of cinema. I'd definitely watch it again!

Just viewed the Criterian Collection "ZULU".

What an epic film.... the then young Michael Caine "made" the film imo.

Those fire by file volleys were so damn realistic.
I was at the edge of my seat with anticipation of the lines crumbling under the sheer onslaught of numbers of attackers.
The respect prayer at the end as the Zulu left the field choked me up.
A code of warrior ethos that will never die as long as combat lives.

A true warrior respects a worthy opponent.
Anything less is cowardice...
