Wow, cinematic masterpiece and epic story. Julian Moore, Michael Caine, and Clive Owen
Check out this 2006 dystopian 2027 based drama. Extremely well done on all levels....
Cheers This is an intriguing one, I have only seen parts of it but one day was watching Outer Limits the newer series and there was a story that was very similar, so I searched it up and it was the same story done before as an episode of the TV series. If you liked it I would check it out, not great but fun to see those different takes on the same story.

Watched Robot Carnival on roku and about half way through Escape Plan, reminds me of those films a few years ago with Sly, can't remember now where they were a combat team, 3 of them. Anyway off to get some baseboard for the kitchen floor, need to have a floor if we must survive the pre-game apocalypse

When you see the cel...there’s no arguing about missing image. You are holding in your hand a 4:3 drawing which was 4:3 on VHS and LD for decades and now cropped 16:9 removing 1/3 of the frame. Stupid. There’s no other word for it.

Yeah, I used to own the Japanese LD but sold it as I didn't care too much for it other than the steam punk robot segment. It seems that the roku version is matted to widescreen and then matted even more than 1.85 almost like a 1.95 or even 2.0 as there are black bars on the tops and bottoms of my widescreen TV Its really funny how we all wanted to see more and get widescreen films to the point that they are selling us everything as widescreen now.

Instead of watching films that reflect the current situation, I decided to flick through the collection to find some comedies. I was always a fan of Bill Bellamy's stand up so I decided to watch How to be a player. Never seen it before having picked it up cheap last year. This is a nasty film full of nasty characters, but let me tell you it made me laugh! Bill Bellamy is a player who is seeing multiple girls at once. His sister hates how he treats women because she was treated the same way. So she and her friend try to scupper Bellamy's love life by trying to invite all his girlfriends to one party. Like I said the film is mean spirited in tone but still comes across as funny. It's not as mean spirited as say Antonio Banderas in Two much. Where he pretends to be his own twin just so he can date two girls at the same time! For a film that came out in '97 it feels like it came out in '93. It feels very early nineties but in the best possible way. Bernie mac was funny as well. Its always a treat to see him on screen since he passed. I cant say I'd recommend the film to everyone but it cheered me up. For a complete tonal shift I spun up father of the bride 2 afterwards. Classic movie. Makes me wish I had the first one on ld too. Defiently a bit sappy and schmaltzy, but Steve Martin always puts a smile on my face. What accent is Martin Short meant to be doing in these films anyway??

just saw AKIRA for what is essentially the first time
(saw it once back in the mid-90's, rented it when i was staying up at my grandma's. remembered very little about it)
- and... yes, it was/is technically impressive, but... that is pretty much ALL it has going for it, at least IMHO.
THE VENUS WARS, for instance, might not be quite so exquisitely crafted, and in general, is no real masterpiece in storytelling, IMO, but it certainly is, in virtually all meaningful respects, head-and-shoulders above the technically lovely but otherwise rather hideous AKIRA...

Just re-watched True Lies (1994) [PCLH-00001]My I gave it full rating on all fronts after watching it the last time, and you know what? I'd still probably give it that. Good picture, surprisingly competent sound (for a mere dolby surround), and a lovely gatefold.

Just recorded THE STAND for a buddy Man, I forgot how much went into that production. Really awesome dystopian saga.... WITH A HAPPY ENDING Not a fan of Stephen King books or films per say. HOWEVER - check out the stand if you never have and/ or revisit if able. May just buckle down and read my first King novel ! Cheers

Cheers His writing is not my taste but I have read The Shinning and Running Man. Running Man was actually pretty good and didn't have a King feel. Shinning was OK but not great, thank everything that Kubrick was able to make a really great horror film out of that story. As for The Stand, Haven't seen it in some time but do have the book that I will tackle one day. Keep going firehorse and stay safe, I know you are? EMT? Can't remember but we all must do our parts here. Lets hope it ends sooner and then we get back on track faster.

Continuing the comedy theme, I decided to pull another random comedy off the shelf that I hadn't seen yet. Pulled out a movie called 'Another Steakout' with Emilio esteves Richard dreyfuss and rosie o Donnell. I wasn't sure what to expect. On the back of the cover it has a singular thumbs up from Roger Ebert, which means Gene Siskel didnt like it. There were a few funny jokes in it, like a recurring joke about Emilios character having to shave off his moustache. The plot was lame and unexciting. The best part was the opening scene, where they literally blew their entire budget. The pytotechnic explosion at the beginning is so good that nothing else can rival it later on in the film. Rosie o Donnell is one annyoning actress though. My only real exposure to her being a brit was the flintstones movie. Shes not funny and her voice is extremely grating. I realised halfway through that this must be a sequel hence the word 'Another' in the title. Not recommended. After all that I decided to put on some Tex avery cartoons from the compleat collection. Shoulda put that on from the start.

Tex, some great stuff, I have the individual discs but never picked up the box set. Been watching free roku, or free by means of image rather than internet, still have to pay for internet Watching Lily C.A.T., pretty bad early anime, then started watching Space Adventure Cobra the movie, still classic even if dubbed on Roku. Not a 100% perfect film but very enjoyable, can watch multiple times. Even own it on LD and DVD so may give a spin in original language rather than dealing with the dub.

Yeah, I think I saw that in the theaters when they reissued it in the USA, the hotel scene was very long and tiresome. If you like Jackie I feel his best two are Meals on Wheels, the fights are just great, the story is so so, and Who Am I, again so so story but I feel its his last amazing fight film which is pretty extraordanary considering he was in his mid or late 40s in that film if I remember right. I don't know if I would bother picking up either on LD in this day and age for the price that you may end up paying, Who am I is very expensive since it was a later release, I think its still up there but it also may not be anymore. May need to spin that up later today now that I think of it
