I never heard of Discoviiosn until I can here, then I read the differences are. I’m not sure if I read them correctly, or understood them, but here goes nothing.

Is the difference between a Discovision Disc and a Laser Disc that the Discovision has different analog degrees of opacity to strengthen/weaken the light passed through the disc to the laser receiver, whereas the Modern Laser Disc has analog reflective grooves that reflect back and then alters the aim/timing of where/when the laser hits the sensor. Are they that fundamentally different as one is a pass-through and the other is a bounce-off? Yet the are considered the same format?

I got a question about interoperability. Can LaserVision machines read Discovision media? Can Discovision Machines read Laser Disc Media?

If both can read each others, I don’t understand how one machine can read both if one is a pass-through technology, and the other is a bounce-off technology. And considering the fact they were both analog, it’s not as simple as a 1 or 0 but varying degrees from .000000000... to .999999999...

I don’t even if I know I’m right. A little help here.

But I know that even if that format is overcome, Dolby AC3 RF discs have a mono track for old machine compatibility, and DTS uses the digital portion, so analog only machines won’t be affected. I know THAT part of the inter-compatibility, but am not sure of the physical media differences being compatible.

There is absolutely NO difference between LaserDisc and DiscoVision. ZERO. The formats both are reading the pits and lands variances to create an RF carrier on which everything is based. There is nothing in either formation regarding degrees of opacity.

Now, there were efforts to have a pass-through disc (I believe the MD Laserfilm system was pass-through), but none that were commercially available.

Blam1 is correct.

Many people will go to town trying to find the best player for Discovision but overall it’s just an LD with analog sound released during a specific timeframe. After that Pioneer took over and wasn’t as interested in branding the heck out of every cover.

Some players will player DV better than others for the same reason some players will play rotters or warped discs better. It’s just because early LD wasn’t perfect.

Where would you even find something like this said by anybody else in this world??

And at least his posts are getting smaller, no more novellas.

Well there are enough Discovision-centric members here and posts about DV performance that I can see it confusing someone.

You need to read some history, Discovision was an early group of companies working together to promote the laserdisc format. When it didn’t take off as a home format in the USA Pioneer kept hold of the dream and to keep it going for years and dropped the Discovision name.

This is a great site - full of very interesting info & should answer your questions.

It is theMCA DiscoVision History - Blam Entertainment Group

www.blam1.com/DiscoVision/DiscoVision_History.htm

A big thanks to blam1 for that

Cheers

Clearly the OP has not even done some basic research and has no idea.

I was just piecing bits found on lddb, in ways that looked like they fit together.

Thanks for the website.

I knew clear pass-through discs was part of the history. That was only a prototype of a former-competitive later-merged format.

The consumer Discovision format didn’t have both reflective and pass-through discs. That was just competing first drafts. All Discovision discs were reflective. I just tread the quality varied between Philips and Pioneer,
