Just because the animation is bad doesn't mean the series itself is bad. I can't believe how hung up people get on that. It's a lot like how Carnage in C-Minor is considered the worst episode of the original Transformers cartoon, when it's only the worst animated episode. It certainly isn't the worst in every other aspect.[/quote]
Wow that C-minor sort of reminds me of those Korean animes they made, I have some on DVD but can't remember the titles now.

I had TAS on LD once, got it in a lot and was excited as I wanted to like it but don't know if it was the stories or pacing that was a pill for me.
TOS is really the best and its nice to watch the series in order as they were released like Gundam should be as posted before.

Also I never got into the later series but did watch Enterprise which was OK not amazing but not bad at all, didn't care
about the love part with the alien girl and Captain.

I still haven't seen Enterprise, outside of the Mirror episodes since they tie directly into two different TOS episodes. Even though the UK blu box set is fairly cheap, it's still a lot (for me anyway) to dish out for something I have no idea if I'll like. But I also feel like I should buy it anyway for completion's sake since that particular era of Star Trek ended with that show.

If you can handle circa 1980 low budget TV anime then I recommend the movies I, II, and III which where made mostly from the TV series. Then I'd suggest the Origin OVAs which will send you back in time or the Zeta movies which move you forward.

New Trek episodes (well to me) that also evoked childhood memories of simpler happy times watching Super Friends on Saturday mornings? It was all good.

To me the Animated Series always felt like real Trek. Much closer to legit than a lot of other stuff.

Similarities to Star Wars. So far I've given solid examples:

1. A rebellion against an empire
2. A young unlikely hero
3. A magical super power for a chosen few
4. laser swords
5. Taro =R2D2 (Thanks Zeta!)

This argument just gets easier and easier...

First 5 seasons of voyager and ds9 were released in Japan. 60 episodes of ds9 were released in the US. There is a “captains” themed set in the US, also released in Pal in Europe, which includes one episode from tos, tng, voy and ds9. That is the only Voy episode for the US region on LD.

Voy and Ds9 didn’t make it to Blu-ray. There is one ds9 episode as an extra on the tos season 3 Blu-ray set. Tos Blu-rays allow you to watch the series with original and enhanced special effects. Tng Blu-ray are only available in enhanced special effects.

If you want the original effects and original soundtrack in lossless mono (dolby surround for tng) then the Lds are the best way to watch them. All st lds look phenomenal for ld btw. Blurays have the original soundtracks as well but only in lossy dolby digital 2.0.

If you don’t mind the new remixed 5.1 soundtracks then Blu-ray are the best. The enhanced effects are very well made and don’t freak you out like in star wars se.

They are also available on prime and netflix from the same masters as the Blu-rays but the lossy nature of the streaming puts them even a step less than the lds.

Lds are super expensive though. You can probably find good deals on Japanese sets but shipping will cost an arm and a leg. Blu-ray sets are like $10 a season nowadays.

Also for the record, the TOS blus have both the original and updated special effects. TNG has updated special effects only, but unlike TOS, the amount of SFX they had to completely redo was minimal so I'm not even sure they count as "updated" for the most part. I think the crystalline entity they had to do from scratch because it was never shot on film to begin with.

1: This is going on basically at all times since the days of the Bible. You may as well mention that it has "conflict".

2: See: 1

3: Nope. Everyone will eventually become a Newtype. Our kids will anyway. It isn't for "force sensitive" types, it doesn't work base on theoretical particles, it comes from DNA. Newtypes have lots of crazy powers but the most important is empathy. Not Star Trek Empathy but just empathy. The next evolution of humanity will actually give a s**t about itself instead of making that attribute as rare as green eyes.

4: Totally

5: Haro is a robot and so is R2 but this is a really long reach.

My issue here is that you aren't aiming for thematic devices, just any superficial co-happening at all of any kind. Thats not what "inspired" means. Everything made in 1979 looked a little like Star Wars because it was HUGE. That doesn't mean everything was based on Star Wars or got any real inspiration from it. Gundam's real inspiration was in fact Yamato.

Aren't both main protagonists of Star Wars and Gundam blonde?
And I'm sure at one time they both have white shirts........
So another direct rip off

I was thinking about pointing out that R2 has more in common with Analyzer from Yamato, both of whom have dome-shaped noggins AND tend to scoot around on wheels (or treads) despite being bipedal.

Also, Haro is basically a mascot and does nothing in the story. R2 and Analyzer both serve a far more utilitarian purpose.

So you see, Star Wars is in fact inspired by Space Battleship Yamato. :P

Okay, let's look at Space Carrier Blue Noah (1979). How does it "look like Star Wars"?

By your reasoning it should have just as many "superficial co-happenings" as Gundam.

I’m not much of a Star Wars fan but IIRC Lucas did in fact know about Yamato and saw it before he made Star Wars. Possibly this was at Worldcon. You’d have to Google that.

And yeah R2 was an actual piece of military hardware with an IQ. Haro was just a scratch built RC toy that Amuro basically handed off to the orphans to play with once the show got going. By Zeta it was a mass produced toy but still pretty much a toy.

Btw, there is a manga that is highly dramatized and somewhat revisionist but still to the point called Gundam Sousei which explains very specifically what it was like to make the show, it’s goals, the creators inspirations, etc. It’s probably the best Gundam manga there ever was.

What was this thread about again?

Rank Star Trek series best to worst..... that was it.

Was brought up for many years on the original '60s series, never off BBC TV for years & that it is the one for me even with the naff episodes.

Got a look at the blu-ray set recently & great to see the as originally broadcast episodes, not a great fan of the updated effects but perhaps that is just me.

Cheers

I've watched TNG entirely on DVD and BD. People that complain about the BDs are just looking to complain about anything.

As for the Star Wars talk I never once thought watching OG Gundam that I was watching anime Star Wars.

All this talk of Star Trek is making me want to pickup the DVDs of TNG, I personally would rather have the older SFX.
I bought the 3 volumes of TOS on DVD last year and didn't know they released it on Bluray in the original and enhanced but I'm boycotting buying another format
since I have 2 video formats already and then starting a third when its on its death rattle is not a smart move.

Another hijack of this thread.
Just watched We're All Devo and the source is a mix of video and film and has its ups and downs but didn't really watch it closely as I was also trying to do
some work.
