So now in answer to your original post of this topic you have 2 players that are double sided that support all CAV functions 8-) .

Users like you are the reason why engaging in a forum is a joke.

If that's how you want to act, so be it. Have a nice day and goodbye.

Hey, you have players that do what you are looking for and we have told you.
How is that any joke? I'm not laughing after 60 posts on this topic.

I don't want to take sides on this oddball argument but I will say that I had no issues regarding any of Vectrex's questions.

In fact, this question about full CAV support was surprisingly educational for many (e.g.: gypsy didn't even know still frame worked on his LD-S1 ;) ) and I ended learning how some of us old timers overlook something we think is very simple and it turns out it's not so obvious to a newbie.

So yes... we do get a lot of repetitive questions but that can't always be helped. How many times have we discussed "replacing a loading belt" and "how to properly use an AC3-RF Demodulator?". It's just endless and even Julian's attempt to create a section on troubleshooting hasn't made it that much easier to search out a particular curiosity.

And let me just add; it's not like these questions are like "someone we know but I won't say" who was asking questions that just had no business being on the forum in most cases.

I admit, I am still a big noob. I am also very thankful that this forum/site exists as a resource.

Noobs are fine, I like noobs and was a noob.
Its more that when zeta told him his player did CAV and he still told us it didn't.
Go figure, if we say TT three times will he magically appear like beetlejuice :silent:

I'm with gypsy I didn't realize I could do that on my LDS1 either though hopefully for DTS and AC-3 I hope to get my CLD-79 working and for the small ones either use the CLD-79 or the little portable one I got solely for the small discs. I love learning more with these kind of topics just as long as we don't get into Star Wars again.

Yeah. I’m not that irritated by the guy but we seriously did answer his question multiple times and he...frankly it seemed like he wasn’t reading our posts, and that is sort worth getting irked over. Someone asks a question, then someone types out a detailed answer and he basically just responds by asking the question again.

Unlike many other weird guys he’s not illiterate or dumb, he just likes reading his own questions more than the responses. “Hey, guy, wake up! I just answered that question before you asked again for the third time. Can you see my posts? Oh, you must be able to see my posts because you’re quoting them. I...don’t get what’s going on here...”

I need to get a demodulator big time.

I don’t listen to many 5.1 LDs but when I do it’s a lot of fun. It’s barely worth the investment but it is worth it for sure if your favorite LD is 5.1.

Royal Space Force is a big reason to have a demodulator. If you have a 5.1 version of RSF you’ll really be happy with a demodulator.

Here are a few processors w/ AC3-RF Demodulators built in @ a reasonable price on ebay....

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-SDP-EP9ES ... SwKdpcKfl8

https://www.ebay.com/itm/SONY-SDP-E800- ... SwaPNcOQES

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-Model-SDP ... 4121!US!-1

Unfortunately all of them do not come with the remote control but you don’t really need them when used as an RF Demodulator only.

If you have a bunch of AC3 discs you really need one, they sound great but then again so did DTS, one issue is that since LD is
older you really need to know how to hook it up and select stuff as there is no automatic stuff like DVDs have.

Yeah I have a bunch. Is there any risk of damage if I set it up wrong? I believe most have it on the right analog channel? I'll ask for help when the time comes.

I think only issue is wrong sides? like Left rather than Right or front rather than rear.
I don't think you can actually mess anything up other than your brain trying to figure it out

Nothing really risky about adding an RF Demodulator. Even the wrong connections at worst would just exhibit possible noise on your speakers.

All AC3 encoding on LD is located on the right analog audio channel. In addition, in case you just did not know, you do need a player w/ an "AC3-RF output" (just mentioning that since we still get the occasional person thinking that one can extract the AC3 coding off of the analog right channel of the player).

I remember reading about needing a player with it or having to mod one. Pretty sure two of my players have AC3 out.

EVERY LD PLAYER supports CAV functions. All of them. Even the ones that ran in Buick kiosks in 1978. All of them. Yours, mine, everyone. If you have the correct remote or serial access it will happen.

Now someone is going to produce the one player model number that somehow doesn’t but I’m %99.9 every single player does.

I like a challenge! But I'll have to go PAL I'm afraid... there were a few in PAL-land that couldn't do CAV freeze frames and so on - One is the Pioneer CLD-1200 - see the review in LaserDisc review #19, page 23 onwards...

http://magazines.lddb.com/Laser.Disc.Review_UK/1988/Laser.Disc.Review_no.19_1988.12-600dpi.pdf

"[...] the new player does not function properly with CAV videodiscs, treating these exactly as though they were CLV encoded, This is an unexpected economy by Pioneer that will no doubt be seen as rather a strange move by existing LV player owners. [...] Just to put the record straight, a non-CAV capable player is not unprecedented; in some European countries Philips marketed the VP 500, a small top-loader based on the 720/830 mechanism, that was similarly stripped of any CAV facilities to keep the price down."

And here's the VP500, it's rather sweet:

Thanks very much for that. PAL land sure got screwed on LD.

I’m curious to know if removing CAV functions actually does “keep the price down” or if it was just part of the usual artificial product tier crap. I can’t help but wonder...since CAV functions are almost always confined to the remote to begin with, and the CLD-1200 has a remote with very conspicuously absent buttons...

We’ll never find one but I’m pretty sure this player would still do all the CAV stuff if you had another remote. Honestly, I bet the traces are still on the PCB and the only thing actually deleted was the rubber button pads.

The 1200 is definitely a clone of the CLD-1030 that did have a remote that had the needed step and scan buttons. Thus, I'm w/ zeta that the 1200 probably could perform CAV effects if given the proper remote to do so.

Actually I'd forgotten that I own a 'non-CAV' PAL player, the CLD-S310.

https://manuals.lddb.com/LD_Players/Pioneer/CLD/CLD-S310/CLD-S310-EN-FR-DE-IT_Scan.pdf

This is very much an entry-level player - PAL only, single side, no CAV features, no Analogue sound! There's really not very much that it can do :-)

I don't have the original remote (which as can be seen in the manual, has no trick play buttons), but have a Pioneer one from a slightly earlier period (a CU-CLD005) which controls all the major functions of the S310. I just tried the 'trick play' (multi speed, still/step) buttons on that with a CAV disc, and they had no effect at all... and "pause" just shows a blue screen saying "PAUSE" regardless of whether it's a CAV or CLV disc.

Interestingly, despite being incapable of playing Analogue sound (it shows a flashing on-screen message "ANALOGUE DISC - NO SOUND") if you put an analogue disc in you can still switch CX on and off and this is displayed on the screen...
