Hello Everyone !

Im in Australia and have purchased my first LD Player .. a Pioneer CLD D770 (same as 703)
It is in need of a new belt..and clean...but also wanting to learn a bit more about this player...

So Ive got a couple of questions if anyone could please help me learn more about the capabilities of this player ..thanks in advance !

Can anyone tell me if this player can play NTSC discs ? Im not sure if its native PAL either..

If it can play NTSC discs...would that mean I could modify this player with an AC-3RF circuit modification ?

Does anyone know where a user manual PDF could be found for the 770 ?..Ive found a service manual but no user manual as yet.

Thankyou !

The manual seems to be the same one as the 704 in which case I’m pretty sure it’s a 200V NTSC-only player.

As Zeta said, appears the only difference is that the 770 runs on a different voltage so it should be identical other than that to the 703.

For manuals, it appears the user manual for the 704 is only available (I probably should upload my 703 manual to the site at some point) but it’s essentially the same except in regards to the notations regarding the AC3-RF terminal. Here is the link...

https://manuals.lddb.com/LD_Players/Pioneer/CLD/CLD-D704/

As for performing an AC3-RF mod, you can look here for how one was performed on a 703....

http://www.laserdiscarchive.co.uk/laserdisc_archive/pioneer/pioneer_cld-d703/pioneer_cld-d703_ac3_uprade.htm

I’ll be getting my 703 modded at some point of which I’ll post when that happens.

If it's the same story as the D750 (which is the same as D701) there might be a voltage switch on the back for US/JPN and UK/AU voltages...The D701 doesn't have that switch afaik. Those two units share the same user manual.

Also, if it's NTSC only that should be printed on the back of the unit somewhere.

Edit:
Yes, please upload any manuals missing in the hardware database :) I still need D701/D750 user and service manuals :(

Will give it a clean up and then give it a test run. Have downloaded the 704 user manual ..thanks for the link.

Also thankyou for the info link on how to mod for AC-3RF

Will get round to that once I get used to the player and all checks out working.

First problem to fix...
Does anyone use a nonstandard belt with success?... thinking Ive got some Cassette belts that are square and around the same diameter but probably wouldnt be as thick.

Starting to think this unit maybe only good for spares....unless I can get the tray out ...Im suspecting something is broken ..missing gear tooth or more.??. The mechanism seems quite worn. Uploading a video shortly...note there is no belt connected at the moment (perished)

I got the tray out...but still not sure why it was jammed... Found (so far) one black plastic tooth misssing on the tray .. half missing teeth from a white plastic gear tooth.! see Pictures next posts

At this stage I am not expecting this player to work...something isnt right with the loading mechanism...but still its a learning experience!

Ive added a belt which seems ok.. removed grease relube...cleaned tray and surfaces. Wondered about timing marks on the gears...where should they be when reinstalling tray.?

So perhaps the owner had a disc in when the loading belt broke!!?....forced the tray open to get the disc out..and forced it back in breaking some teeth in the process..???! assume everything is misaligned...the loading mechanism does not feel smooth at all. Still thinking this is spares only ..but still would like to see how far I can go to seeing what will work or not.

The motor in that deck is worth more than the rest of it. There are tons of otherwise fine 704/703/99s with wasted spindle motors. Do NOT throw the spindle motor out! Even if you never get another one of these decks you can still trade the motor for $100 worth of discs probably if the bearing is good.

Most LD players break form a lack of use. My guess is someone let this thing sit for 20 years and then fired it up just before you bought it and all that stuff happened because the lube was all frozen.
