Hi folks. I'm new to the forum. Well actually I've been away for a few years and had to re-register. Anyway, I have a Pioneer Elite CLD99 that I bought on eBay several years ago. I've had it packed away and just decided I wanted to hook it up again. When I bought it several years ago, it smelled like cigarette smoke. I complained to the seller at the time but got nowhere and decided to keep it. Well after being packed away it still smells like cigarette smoke. I can't stand it. Is there anyway to get rid of this smell? I've currently got the top off and it's sitting in my garage. I cleaned the top and the inside of the top with Simple Green. May have helped a little but the inside of the machine smells pretty bad. There is no nicotine staining anywhere. I was thinking of trying compressed air. I don't want to go taking the whole thing apart because I'm liable to mess it up. I'm open to suggestions on how to save this thing because I just can't use it the way it is. Thanks.

Not a problem I've ever encountered myself, but I've seen people ask similar questions about other items and they always say the best way to get rid of cigarette smell is leaving it outdoors for a day or two.

Thanks for the suggestion. I can probably try putting it in the backyard for a few hours each day where nobody will see it.

You aren't going to get rid of the smell 100% unless you can clean the player 100%.

Best options are to get some type of cleaner solution and wipe down the entire outside of player and take the top off and wipe the
inside of the metal casing.

Then you have the chip board and parts, I would try to wipe down as much as possible and hope for the best.
Unless you decide to make some type of box to fit the player in with baking soda and let it sit inside said box OR
wash all the inside somehow you won't get rid of the smell 100% but it will mostly be gone.

You have to run it. LD players are giant fans and running them hugely helps with this exact problem. I know since when I got my LD-W1 it smelled like a 1978 Trans Am.

It doesn’t sound like you’ll be able to live with the smell that long so please sell the smelly thing to me since I can handle it and I’d love to have another 99.

I can try leaving it in a cardboard box with some baking soda.

I honestly haven't used it much at all since I bought it. I just couldn't stand the smell and packed it away for years. I may wind up trying to sell it. I will certainly let you know if I decide to do that. Thanks.

I haven't had a 99 but I'll buy it too.
Not going to give you mint price since it stinks and will need to be cleaned.

Currently sitting in my garage with the top off. I'll probably try the box and baking soda trick first since that's the easiest. I can only sit it outside for a few hours each day so that would probably take too long. Taking it all apart is really beyond my expertise.

Just double check if the baking soda will mess anything up.
I think the baking soda may have moisture and may mess up something???
Just double check and do it at your own risk.

I have had this work and not work with books that stank.

I'll keep a check on it but I don't think it will hurt anything.

I'd try a heap of silica gel packets myself, you can even throw them inside the unit as long as you can still get to them using chopsticks.
Yeah I know it's mostly used to get rid of moisture but it can help with odours.

The Pro-Scan player I acquired 20 years ago came from a smoker’s house and did have that smell when I took possession of it.

In an attempt to get rid of the smell, I just did a light clean-up on the exterior of the casing (just water) and wiped away any heavy layer of dust in the player with a cloth (it was really just the tray since it was the only part that was exposed). It still smelled like a cigarette but after having it sit around exposed for at least a year it totally went away.

So in the end, just leave it out and let time resolve it. I would not recommend using any chemicals on it just in case it might damage the player.

Thanks for the info. When I first bought it several years ago I took the top off and let it sit in a room with a fan for about a week or so. It didn't really help but maybe I just didn't give it enough time. This machine is very clean inside.

I would make sure to avoid further disassembly. Leaving the top off might help, but I would make sure it isn't getting dusty.

As mentioned above, the best solution might be just to run it. I wouldn't just set an LD on repeat though to avoid needless wear on the player. It is an excellent player. I keep mine in rotation.

I never had to leave my player opened up to get rid of the smell since most (if not all) of the smell is coated outside of the player. Nor did I have to play a disc all that much as well.

It will dissipate over time but make sure it’s exposed and not sitting inside a box

I wish my players smelled like cigarettes, I can't afford to smoke to generate the smell myself but the smell reminds me of watching TV with my dad in the good times.

Playing the player is going to pump thousands of times more air through it than having it just sit there. It’ll take millennia to get the smell out doing essentially nothing.

Imagine if you had a fan that smelled like smoke. Would you take it apart and spray stuff on it? No, you’d put it in the garage and leave it running until it smelled more like your garage than smoke. LD players don’t have any active ventilation but they do move a lot of air just by operating.

I would avoid putting the player on replete in a ceder closet though. It is a 99 so the days are numbered on its spindle. To make the most of it someone should be watching movies on it while it airs out. It would be a shame if it died when airing out.

Thanks guys. I decided to put it back together and hook it up. When I was opening the tray, I noticed that a lot of the smell seems to be coming from the tray itself. So I tried to clean it with some simply green then isopropyl alcohol. Not a good idea. It made it kind of sticky and now the tray is all streaked up. It smells better but it looks like this. I tried wiping in down with just a damp rag. What’s the best way to clean this up?
