OVAs like Bubblegum Crisis, Giant Robo, etc were $100 per episode. The UY box set was...I want to say $5000? I can’t remember.

Funny enough, I think Laser Perceptions was not even profiteering that bad. The 1995 Nikaku Animart catalog textfile had it listed as such: Quote: Urusei Yatsura Box Set, TV Series (50 discs) .................. 4,125.00 I think Nikaku still has LDs in stock (at 90s prices). Their website has been down for a bit, but they are still around on Facebook.

My hope for UY is that Discotek is able to release the series. They got more of the movies, so maaaybe. Super happy about that, I'll probably try to sell my LDs when the BDs roll around.

Their website has been down for a bit, but they are still around on Facebook. Nikaku probably does have the same Tenchi TV and Final Fantasy OVAs they had 25 years ago. Laser Perceptions was legit. I bought stuff from him at Japan street price a couple of times. I payed $90 for Flashback 2012, that one I can remember. It was a new full price reprint from like 97 or so. The main issue back in the day wasn’t price, it was selection. There was no used anime LD market in the US, even in downtown SF 1993 I don’t know if there was a place taking trade ins. So once stock of Bubblegum Crisis Ep 3 or Five Star Stories ran out there wasn’t any easy way to get them short of flying to Japan until eBay and even then probably eBay 2005 before you could reliably search and buy anime by particular release. Many many many of these old LDs we like were only in print one time. Therefore anyone who could get you what you wanted deserved the markup. None of these places were rich. They were for sure paying bills with that extra money.

Not what they cost, it is the crazy price japs put on them when there was nothing above LD quality for otakus, and a rare one episode OVA on VHS also at 8.000 yen like Cosmos pink shock for example is again the crazy price they put to a cheap cassette to save the production

The top format is very expensive because they are not targeting the common person as their market. So I think Zeta's point is what the retail price was. ertoili wrote: I bet the sales of the UY LD Boxes were pretty low in japan and near cero outside japan Criterion USA are 39-49$ per disc not 100, and Signatures(jap) are more than double the price of the Signatures (usa). The jap editions are hard covers and kanjis look great but crazy expensive Probably so, especially since you would have needed to know Japanese at the time to watch it. Plus that price point does just generally not work in the US. Aniplex and Ponycan tried, it did not go well for them. Aniplex packed up their toys in a huff but is back now with a slightly new but still bad approach.

You do know that’s usually where ALL the production money comes from, right? So if an OVA costs $150,000 to make and there is no theatrical release and no possibility of TV and you don’t know if you’ll be in business long enough to reap the profits of a low price reprint...WHERE DO YOU GET THE MONEY? If you only charge $40 and somehow keep half of that as profit (impossible) and split the difference on manufacture you‘d have to sell 15,000 copies which is actually more than a lot of those really obscure OVAs probably sold. And that’s to make a cheap OVA. If you’re making To-y or Giant Robo things double and triple in cost quickly. You may find yourself in a situation where you have to also sell the OST on CD to every fan to not lose money. The reason new anime sucks is that it’s controlled by cheap foreigners. Q: “Why isn’t there anything like Project A-Ko today?” A: Because you won’t pay $200 for it! That really is most of not all of the reason new stuff sucks. Nobody creative and cool in Japan wants to move Korea and be hugely underpaid to make crap, the downward spiral worsens, etc.
