Saying that new devices don’t look good on a CRT...based on what? Have you tried it? I have, SD and HD, the only issue is that text is unreadable because it’s made so small only 1080p can display it. Otherwise it’s fantastic. Consider that “CRT” also includes progressive scan monitors and HDMI equipped HDTVs that go as high as 1080i/720p which is great for Blu-ray.

Sony is the best TV company and has been since before anyone had heard of Samsung. I’m not a person who shops for lower priced alternatives to things just to save money. I prefer to keep the good guys in business. When you stop buying quality tools...make no mistake, they’ll stop making them.

If Sony is rebadging Samsung TVs that’s news to me. I’d would be very sad if true.

I mentioned quality upscalers like Lumigen but I don’t use them. Ask Substance as he has tried *everything*.

I mentioned calibration because it’s key. It’s key regardless of gear. If you try to max out the brightness and contrast and crank the sharpness and edge enhancement up LD will look like a** even with the best gear on earth. I cannot stress this enough. Don’t try to make it Blu-ray. It will just look worse. If you want Blu-ray, buy Blu-ray. If some Youtuber convinced you that LD is the LP of video, get that idea out of your head right now because it ain’t! LD has maybe %5 of the picture info as 4K Blu-ray. LD cannot compete on that field.

Sony isn't slapping their brand name Samsung TV's. They can use Samsungs display panels, but so do a LOT of other companies. Sony's OLED TV's use LG display panels. Even todays Apple iPhones use Samsung displays. The practice is really common, as only so many manufactures are making good high end panels these days.

As for new content on CRT looking like a**, as stated, is b******t. What about good quality computer monitors? Later HD CRTs that have HDMI inputs? That Youtube channel Digital Foundry is going nuts over how good CRT's look with modern games.

And as for the actual topic at hand, I've always used a good composite cable, looks great on my CRT. I honestly haven't even tried the S video because I always remembered the "composite encoded disc, stick with a composite cable" thing. I should try it one day for S&G, but I doubt it would be like my Super Nintendo for example, which looks noticeably better with S-video

I still regularly use a VGA CRT monitor that goes well beyond 1080p. It looks great.

Yeah, I still have a decent 19” SVGA monitor from...I don’t remember. I pretty much only use it for Dreamcast and Cube. It’s the only way to play Rez (also with very loud headphones.)

If a game exists originally on DC it’s hard for me to want to play a port of it. Seeing Sega exit the console business was very sad. For me the “true” version of Rez, Crazy Taxi, Shenmue 2, etc is the Dreamcast one, even when it’s not technically the best.

I think it's important to keep in mind that survivorship bias is very apparent with CRT monitors. People always remember those really fine Diamondtron and Trinitrons, or those pro-level Sonys and Ikegamis. Your average TV set by Magnavox from the 80s will not hold up very well today unfortunately.

Still if you can find a high-end CRT then sure, I'd say go for it. I'm sitting in front of a GDM-FW900 at this very moment and it does require some work to get the alignment right, plus you can get some major improvements with some external calibration software like CalMAN. But after that it's really fantastic. Sure I love my HP Z27s and Eizo monitors that I've got in my studio but I see no reason for me to replace the FW900 anytime soon unless it dies beyond repair.

As for currently available TVs then Sony do indeed have some very good offers for sure. However if you're in Europe then it's certainly worth it to take a look at what Panasonic has to offer as those sets are not for sale in the US. From my experience they tend to have better uniformity and more stable color management, as well as better controls for calibration. Of course Sony may offer other features that could become a deal-breaker and there's nothing wrong with that.

As for Rez, IIRC it was developed for DC in first hand but it was released on the PS2 on pretty much the same day. Fantastic game regardless of what platform you play it on.

Definitely not all were great CRTs, but decent Trinitrons and such are not hard to find nowadays, people still seem to be clearing these things out.

Also I agree with zeta, if it started on the Dreamcast that's where it's meant to be. I splurged on Shenmue II dreamcast because Xbox version won't do. Rez on PS2 actually doesn't look quite as nice, as there is way more aliasing. Oddly enough if a game was released on N64 and Dreamcast I still go for the Dreamcast one, lol.

Rez hits 60fps on PS2 while it's capped to 30fps on the Dreamcast so that's a big trade-off. Either way I prefer Rez Infinite if I ever want to revisit the game nowaday. Must agree with you on that the Shenmue games are still very playable on the Dreamcast originals despite the English dub in the first game.

To be fair it takes two to move my 40" sony LCD. I meant more in terms of the fact that there aren't many modern devices you could use with a crt. I'm pretty sure you couldn't connect a ps4 to a crt without having to jump through hoops. A lot of modern digital devices can look terrible on a crt. Cheap set top boxes designed for digital TVs for example.

For me a crt would only be a dedicated display for my laserdiscs and retro video games.. not for general use. Which isn't too practical in a one bed flat.

My previous Sony WEGA KD-36XS955 had an HDMI input so I had no issues using my PS4 on it.

Fair enough. I was only really referring to my own experience. Never used or even seen a hd crt in person. Not sure how common they were in the UK. Having used a modern digital set top box on a non hd crt, I can say it looks terrible compared to straight into the LCD. Too much over scan and the text is illegible. I prefer crts for older stuff.

Does the PS2 one run in progressive scan? I actually have no idea but 640x480 VGA is literally the only way I’ve played Rez on DC.

I've got a dvl-700 which according to some reviews I found from back in the day has a pretty good comb filter on its s video output. I tried it out and yeah, it is a better comb filter than any of my tvs(crt or hd) have on their composite input so thats how I watch my laserdiscs now.

This may get a chuckle....

I simply utilize RCA ( edit * composite * ) connectors. Have thought about S video over the decades however not moved to implement.
For my separate JVC receiver audio cables, I utilize off brand generic REALLY thick stereo cable. These work REALLY well to my ears.

Perhaps some day I will join the 90's tech wise !
In truth I am an old man set in his ways. Truly enjoy my Media setup. I put more emphasis on video game visual media 720P/1080P (outdated however epic!)
For LaserDisc /dvd I emphasis the audio experience and enjoy the 1970's era setup I have enjoyed well into the new millennium !
I welcome any and all criticism ! Perhaps that is what I need to get with the 1990' s lmao !
My son would fall off his chair if he knew I would be open to new tech !

Cheers you peepz
