Hi! Just bought my first LD player! But the eBay buyer mixed up the units. I ordered a 700, he sent a V888. I want the best possible LD playback quality for the price - via composite and the s-video output. I can't find a direct comparison anywhere online... is the DVL-V888 an upgrade or a downgrade? Which would you choose? FYI I don't care about the DVD or Karaoke mode, just LD. Thank you!!!

If its working then I would say they are both very close.
Good luck with transfering your discs.

I will second rein-o and say that if it's working then dont worry about it. They will probably do a comparable job.

I've had both models and the DVL-700 is ever so slightly better for LD playback.

Is that slight improvement worth the risk of shipping the players back to and fro? I would say not.

If you feed either player through a decent comb filter, you'll get good results.

Though a hidden plus to the DVL-V888 is that you can decode LD-G on the US model if you have the remote.

There is nothing better about the DVL-700 over the DVL-V888. The DVL-V888 is based on the DVL-909 player. On the LD side, they are going to be comparable. DVD wise, the V888 will be vastly superior.

The problem with the V888 is the standard remote is terrible. There are no facilities for multi-speed or frame advance. The player will do the operations, they are just missing from the remote. If your goal is Karaoke only, the CU-DV016 remote (the remote for the V888) is fine. However for real LaserDisc features, you're better off with the CU-DV018, CU-DV030 or CU-DV027, with the DV027 being the best remote for all DVL players.
