I've seen a few PAL Laserdiscs with PAL/SECAM on the cover and I was wondering were there actually any pure SECAM Laserdisc players? My assumption is that there maybe was due to, for example, France being a pure SECAM country for many years until the migration to DVB. What does it mean for Laserdisc players? Which ones can play back SECAM discs, if indeed there were any? Or were PAL discs able to be played back on SECAM equipment with no problem?

There's some great information about SECAM here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SECAM

I never knew that until recently, North Korea loved a bit of SECAM goodness! :wtf:

Personally I only have one SECAM item, a French VHS of one of the best films ever made, the magnificent Speed Driver (never released on Laserdisc afaik). Sadly it only plays back in B&W on my VHS deck. SECAM VCR's seem to be a rarity for some reason, unless I'm looking in the wrong places.

Is your VHS player and your tv SECAM compatible?
I've never had a SECAM tape to test myself but I've seen PAL players that claim to be SECAM compatible, I might even still have such a player. I think my Trinitron is PAL/NTSC/SECAM.

I have an SVO-1500P. It is PAL/NTSC. It will play SECAM tapes but only in black and white. My TV won't work with SECAM I don't think as SECAM for TV's hasn't been a thing for years afaik?

I have a Mylene Farmer music tape that is SECAM.

My Pioneer DVD/VHS combo recorder plays it in colour and it is really
cool to see the word SECAM pop up on my Pioneer Kuro instead of PAL NTSC or HDMI.

Yeah the Trinitron is obviously old and not my main tv. Running a 32" crt all the time uses too much juice, plus it's only 480/576i max

This is so far from what I care about but I'll give what info I remember when walking past electronic stores back in the day in NYC.

I remember all VCRs from those grey market shops were always both PAL/Secam, when they had hand written signs offering players or labels on the players
they gave you some specs and most if not all did.

Dont know if any actually have it marked on back as I never got into VHS as I always hated it as a format but you can keep an eye out for
them as they would be combo from what I remember never single.

This is the same of what I remember for TVs that they also sold.

I'm no expert on this just what I remember as a kid.

Yes but there were two kinds of SECAM.

Most PAL/SECAM capable recorders could only play SECAM East tapes from the former Eastern Bloc. I had such a player back in the 80s/90s. It would play our Polish SECAM
tapes in colour but the French tapes were black and white. It is actually rare to find a VHS from outside of France being capable of playing back French video tapes in colour.
Those players / recorders were really expensive.

That makes sense as the stores were Russian run or eastern block so they would have been selling that type.
Didn't know there were 2 types, neat.

There was MSECAM as well I think. I'd love to see a PAL vs SECAM vs NTSC comparison. I always had the impression BITD that SECAM was some super high tech format better than Pal and NTSC.
