Hi All
I have collected for cheap today an old Yamaha Receiver (RX-V2090) and with it came a Yamaha Sound Processor a DDP-1 which accepts AC3 input.

The Receiver seems to work fine...(and btw sounds very good for an oldie)..but alas the DDP-1...the one I wanted for AC3...does not...the display comes up dimly and shows solid segments nothing else.... really could try to get it to work again if I could find a Service manual for one?...if anyone could would help with that it would be most appreciated!

Cheers

It probably needs to be recapped. It shouldnt be too difficult to dissasemble and recap if you're comfortable doing it. Fun project also. Open it up for a visual inspection. Are any of the caps bulged or leaking? Even if they look good they can still be bad.

had a good look today at the faulty DDP-1....all caps look ok..all components visually fine.... took all the circuit boards out ..resoldered a few dry joints..(not many and made no difference)...checked voltage in a few areas..segmented display has 13volt dc.....all fuses ok...basically nothing obvious...

When you turn on the unit only one row of the segmented display comes on and dimly (no characters visible though)...the other segment stays off completely.

Hard to know where to go from here..the service manual could help.

Do you have an esr meter? The caps could look good visually but still be faulty. An esr meter will allow you to check to see if the caps have failed. You said it comes on but the display is dim? So the machine isnt totally dead. I'm just guessing but I'm willing to bet one or more of the caps has drifted and not supplying the correct power. Just replace them all caps are as cheap as chips. Its obviously going to be harder to diagnose the fault without a service manual. Don't give up!

Have you tried to see if the processor works at all by setting it up with all the necessary cables? It could be that the only issue is just a messed up display.

Im pretty much flying blind on this one...! At the moment I have a Pioneer D770 only (no AC3 mod yet!)...been trying to get to hear AC3 sound for some time.

I saw a DDP-1 unit on ebay yesterday that went for $10...I missed the auction ...most sellers that know how rare these things are getting jack the prices up of course.!

It could be working ..as it might just be the display...but all chips and components are staying cold even after leaving on for ages...will have another look at components especially power regulators and their diodes and caps...otherwise will hold onto it until hopefully see another reasonably priced unit on fleabay pop up...AC3 units are hard to get these days for sure! Also need to see if I can make an AC3 mod circuit for my D770...but really need something I know that works to try all this out.

As odotb3 stated, it could be bad caps in the power supply. If the chips are not even getting warm, I would think it's likely power supply related. A bad control IC could be the issue too but I would think other chips would still be getting warm.

Agree with that. I always went for processors myself since they are usually cheaper than a standalone RF Demodulator. I might recommend you try and find a unit that has an "optical audio output" if possible since you can use them w/ a modern day AV Receiver and have it do the digital processing.

I have a D703 on my bucket list to update to AC-3 as well. Not sure when I'll get around to it but once I do it will be posted on the site. My M90 is next on the list for a very extensive mod with S/PDIF as well as AC-3.

Thought Id post any research I can find about the DDP-1 as I look at it...as there is so little info out there on this.

Been researching the display today....frankly I do not know that much about LCD displays...so Im mostly learning as I go..

This unit uses a 16x2 Backlit LCD display..markings on the PCB are GEB-2294V-OS and on the other side DMI624 .... it uses two Sanyo Chips to drive-control the display being LC7930 and LC7985NA.

This LCD Display module seems to have been used in other Audio Equipment of the same period...including some Yamaha AVX DSP Models.

I should be able to work out the pinouts as there are datasheets still for the Sanyo chips..so I should be able to check if correct Voltages are present. If there was a way to test the display that would be ideal to help see if the display is faulty or not that would be good ...I have power supplies...but have no way of feeding the display control data.

I doubt the display itself is faulty although like you said without a service manual you cant really check. You could power it up with the display connected and probe the input pins. Find which pin has a voltage and trace back from there. Find a ground point and put your black probe on it, then use the red probe to find your voltages. I would use an esr meter to test the caps also.

Tested Voltages along the display connector...+5V seen at driver/controller IC Sanyo LC7985NA Pin 33 Vdd and Pin 30 V5..no other Voltages on other Pins! Backlight has +3.9V.

Display as seen when switched on:

...research tells me this is a normal startup screen...so I expect the display is ok...at least part of the problem lays in the display not getting Control Signals.

The PCB Microcontroller is an Hitachi HD6473238P10..which is still available today.

Checked +5v Supply Voltage present on Microntroller pin 39 and 14 - it is.
Checked Voltages from each Regulator...all seem nominal! Starting to think we have a Processor failure.

For Reference a Picture of the Complete PCB:

For Reference - Whilst searching for more info with this unit found out How to get into the DDP-1 Test Mode - for those that might need to one day

To put the Yamaha DDP-1 in TEST MODE:

1. Plug unit into AC power and make sure unit is OFF.

2. Push both the MODE and MENU button simultaneously.

3. Push the POWER button ON.

The screen will show:

DDP DIAG V13
AC-3 DECODER

Then the screen will change after a second or two to:

1. PCM L/R :COAX
DIR UNLOCK /A2

Now the MODE button can be used to change what is after the colon to:

RF, OPT, or COAX

The MENU button is used to bring up the settings for surround sound speakers, low frequency enhanced speaker, Pro-Logic input, AC-3 input, and test tone.

The PARAMETER button brings up a slew of other diagnostic and sound settings...

This is the link to the datasheet for the Hitachi HD6473238P10
Pins 14 and 39 are Vcc so the fact that you are seeing +5v is a positive and is probably an inidcation that this chip is ok.

Pin 2 on the display is +5v. It looks like pin 3 is the negative voltage and should measure between 0 and -5v. Are you getting these voltages in reference to pin 1 ground?

Display Pins Voltage Check Results:
Pin 2 Checks at +5v
Pin 3 0Volts seen,
Pin 4 Checks at +5v

All other Display Pins are sitting on 0Volts.
Im not sure the Display Pinout info you found is correct ...this one has 14 pins?...similar but different perhaps...also Pin 3 is connected to VSS on Pin 16 of the Microcontroller.

Connections between....
Display: Microcontroller:
Pin 1 0V
Pin 2 +5V
Pin 3 <---------> Pin 48 Vss (0V)
Pin 4 +5V
Pin 5 <---------> Pin 16 Vss (0V)
Pin 6 <---------> Pin 37 P76/RD
Pin 7 <---------> Pin 47 P20/A8
Pin 8 <---------> Pin 46 P21/A9
Pin 9 <---------> Pin 45 P22/A10
Pin 10 <--------> Pin 44 P23/A11
Pin 11 <--------> Pin 43 P24/A12
Pin 12 <--------> Pin 42 P25/A13
Pin 13 <--------> Pin 41 P26/A14
Pin 14 <--------> Pin 40 P27/A15

Lookslike the Microcontroller Voltages tell us that its in a non standby no reset condition/state..and I believe its in Single Chip Mode. Not seeing any Signal Voltages between Display and Microcontroller connections. Any way to test that the Controller is actually working.?!

I feel like we are getting warmer. The only other thing I could suggest is to use a scope to see if you are getting an input pulse and an output pulse from the chip.

Yep! :thumbup: Getting Late here so Tomorrow Im going to get out my old Oscilloscope ...and see if there is a clock pulse happening on pins 9 (XTAL) and pin 10 (EXTAL)
And maybe Pin 24 (P47/E) - E clock/Enable...which Im not sure if its active...as I believe the controller to be in Single Chip Mode.

If no clock seen then 'XL5' (crystal) probs dead.
If clock..then its something else! :)

Oscilloscope Probing of Microcontroller pins 9 XTAL and 10 EXTAL and 24 E...not seeing any Voltage nor signal. Am I right in thinking there should be a Voltage present on these pins up to 5volts? Im Assuming Crystal Needs Voltage. If so the question would then be why no voltage at crystal.
