Hello!

Was casually asking if my VSA-D8EX could still be service and also asked if they would still service the LD Players I own and there was a good surprise:

LD-S9: Repair service will be finished on Sep.30, 2020
HLD-X9, HLD-X0: Repair service is already finished.

Might get my LD-S9 serviced before it's too late!

Will go there tomorrow (it's not too far from my place) over lunch break and ask what other models they could still service.
Or if there will be a way to buy the remaining spare parts.

Thats great New Julien!
Ill cry a tear if my VSA stops working.

I posted in another thread that i has asked Pioneer New Zealand if i had problems with my R7G if they could help and posted the email reply.
Short answer was yes and would love to show young apprentices old tech :)

That's excellent news for LD owners in your part of the world Jake
I'm imagining it would perhaps be a less positive response from Pioneer Europe these days, or has anyone ever tried contacting them recently?

It will be really interesting to learn if this is the absolute end of all LD servicing and if it were me I'd without doubt deliver my S9 to them pronto! I wonder if they will still support the DVL-919 for a little while longer yet? I keenly await to hear your findings Julien!

Haven't been to the shop yes but the online customer support got me a few answers:

  • When you bring in your product, be sure to bring it in by September 30.
  • The Tokyo Service Station can only provide service in Japanese.
  • The cleaning is requested, but there is a possibility that it may not be possible to repair it if it is malfunctioning. (Also, even in that case, there will be an inspection fee.)
  • After the repair is finished, please come to pick it up at Tokyo Service Station because there is a high possibility that we will not be able to repair your LD-S9 if it is damaged during transportation.
  • Even if it breaks down soon after cleaning, it may not be able to be repaired (basically, not after 9/30).
  • The repair service of all LD players will be finished as of 9/30/2020.

That's it, Pioneer is out of their contractual 10-year servicing obligation I suppose?

Julien

Thanks Julien, so the final curtain on everything LD, very sad but I suppose inevitable really and tbh I was really surprised when you posted yesterday that they were still offering any servicing by now anyway.

Just back from the Service Center where they probably still didn't fully comprehend this over excited gaijin (me) showing up with a mint LD-S9 for servicing and inquiring about a lot of things!

The person before me left a CLD-R5 for servicing as well.

But the bad news (for now) are:

Quote:
1/ Do you still have spare parts available to buy?
=> We do not sell internal repair parts.

2/ What will happen to the parts/stock after 2020/9/30?
=> It will be discarded.

3/ Do you still have the User/Service manuals available?
=> We do not sell service manuals.

I'm not giving up. I'll make a serious business offer to purchase the remaining parts inventory in bulk.
For this I need the service desk/center to escalate higher in the hierarchy.
I gave them my LDDb business card if it can help :-)

I can be reaaaaaaallllly annoying until they give up :-P

I'd be happy to throw in a few Yen if it helps. I would like to think others would be keen to help too. Think along the lines of the guy who bought up all the deLorean blueprints, inventory and factory casts from Belfast. He can now make 100% accurate parts for deLorean's forever. I think they are even looking to start building new DMC-12's again soon.

If you were successful in purchasing the remaining inventory it might be a good idea to scan the parts so that reproductions could be 3D printed or cast if possible. An expensive venture in both time and money, but surely worth it?

Best of luck.

I'm with Ted on this, so perhaps a bit of a rally call to the membership if Julien can work out some sort of deal?

Good luck Julien!

Damn, I had already inquired about getting my X9 serviced earlier this year, and was told that they no longer service them because they no longer have the parts, so I had assumed the same applied to other models.

Would've picked up the partially-working CLD-R5 I saw a month ago and had it repaired if I had known, but pretty sure it's gone now.

The other guy got it and was walking out with it repaired when Julien saw it.

Don't particularly need another player right now, so I actually hope that whoever bought it got it serviced by Pioneer so it will hopefully continue working for many more years.

Went to the local Hard Off but didn't see another R5 or anything else that might still be serviceable (like a DVL-919 maybe?),but I live on the other side of Tokyo so I'd have to take at least 3 trains to get out to this place, which wouldn't be fun with an LD player. Still, I really wish I could take advantage of this final chance to get official Pioneer LD repairs.

I hope all those replacement parts are not just thrown out. I'm in the US but if they were here I would ask if I could take the inventory and that way there would be a supply that I could send out to those who need replacements.

Got an update from Pioneer Service Center on my LD-S9:

1/ Belt was worn and will be replaced (I know that: got a few loading errors recently).
2/ Rubber Mat was worn and will be replaced.
3/ M-Holder is fine.
4/ Laser level on the optical bloc is weak and towards end of life.

It costs basically the price of a used LD-S9 on YAJ but you cannot know the mileage of these players after 20 years.
I already have spare parts for 1/ 2/ and 3/ but it's the last chance I'll ever have to get a brand new 4/ optical block from Pioneer Japan.

=> I agreed to have the optical block replaced with a new one.

Also asked to get all the replaced/old parts back.

Julien

This is the most recent Email I sent to Pioneer Japan:

Quote:
Good evening,

Here are a few more elements to explain why I am very serious about buying the remaining LaserDisc inventory/parts.

Of course, PIONEER JAPAN would be credited and properly thanked for extending this goodwill gesture to the LDs fans around the world still collecting players and discs.

Over the years, I personally acquired:

CLD-D925 => my father was working with Pioneer France/Clarion in the 90's
    CLD-R5
    LD-S9
    RFD-1
    HLD-X9
    LG-1
    HLD-X0

In the past 20 years, I built a central website for all things LaserDiscs to keep the information and people connected.

As of today:

    Users = 7,917 persons
    Collection = 837,627 Laserdiscs

The FORUM allows for discussions:
    Total posts = 104,159
    Total topics = 8,014
    Total members = 4433

They are overwhelmingly (83%) owning Pioneer LD Players:

What brand is your main LD Player?

    Pioneer 83% 83% [ 410 ]
    Panasonic 8% 8% [ 37 ]
    Sony 3% 3% [ 15 ]
    McIntosh 2% 2% [ 8 ]
    Marantz 2% 2% [ 8 ]
    Yamaha 1% 1% [ 5 ]
    Philips 1% 1% [ 4 ]
    Toshiba 0% 0% [ 2 ]
    Mitsubishi 0% 0% [ 1 ]
    NEC 0% 0% [ 1 ]
    Hitachi 0% 0% [ 1 ]
    Theta 0% 0% [ 1 ]
    Samsung 0% 0% [ 0 ]
    Kenwood 0% 0% [ 0 ]
    Technics 0% 0% [ 0 ]

Because the hardware devices are getting old now (some are more than 40 years old), we are trying to keep all the information/knowledge we can about LD Players.

Laserdisc Players (and related hardware equipments) » Technical questions, Repair, Troubleshooting, Advices

    Pioneer LD-* Players
Questions related to the Pioneer line of LASERDISC ONLY players (LD-S1, LD-S9, etc.)
    Pioneer CLD-* Players
    Questions related to the Pioneer line of CD/LD players (CLD-95, CLD-A100, CLD-D925, CLD-R5, CLD-310, CLD-V2800, etc.)
    Pioneer HLD-* Hi-Vision Players
Questions related to the Pioneer line of Hi-Vision players (HLD-1000, HLD-X0, HLD-X9, etc.)
    Pioneer DVL-* Combi Players
Questions related to the Pioneer line of CD/LD players (DVL-9, DVL-909, DVL-919, DVL-H9, etc.)

We collect User Manuals, Service Manuals, Remote Controls compatibility list, Repairs, Hacks, AC3RF modifications, MUSE information, Catalogs, Magazines, etc.

It is becoming harder and harder to find official Pioneer (Japan) spare parts, documentation, information.
For safety, some years ago,I purchased a set of Pioneer Reference Disc (2001) [GGV1069], M-Holders (VNL1700, VNL1603), rubber mats, belts, etc.

Based on these elements, I would really beg you to reconsider NOT discarding all the remaining parts/inventory after 2020/9/30 and allow me to acquire them as a bulk purchase.
They will become quite useful for all the people around the world still maintaining and repairing their LD Players (a lot are Japanese models).

Please forward this business offer to the relevant person inside Pioneer/Onkyo Japan and/or the Service Centers around Japan for consideration.

I hope you will kindly reconsider not throwing away a big piece of LaserDisc history.

Best Regards,
Julien WILK

If you could help me (politely) push as well, the contact page is here:

https://form.jpn.pioneer/ja/support/contact/e/jpn_product/ (link removed)

To be helpful, you could tell your name, where you live, list all the Japanese Pioneer LD Players you own and explain that you are supporting my effort to continue supporting LD Hardware after September 30th, 2020 if they let us acquire the remaining inventory parts.
