I've had my CLD-D703 for over 30 years. I had it in storage but have recently got it out to install in my system. I found that the player will load and play CD's correctly. On the LD side, it loads, head moves forward then back, then spins down. It does not indicate how many chapters on the disc or tell me the minutes and seconds. If I press side B, the head moves to B stays there for a few seconds then moves back to A and stops spinning. No indications of chapters or time are displayed (the display is working correctly.) As I said it plays CD's correctly. I've replaced the belt. Any other ideas that I have not thought of?

Maybe more like 26 years; the 703 came out in 1994 ;).

In any case, it sounds like the mechanics of the machine based on what you described sounds fine (a bad belt would usually not allow the clamper to lock down on an LD and thus the laser wouldn't even move). However, how about any squeal or slipping noises when it attempts to spin up an LD? If so, you probably need to clean (alcohol and a swab) or get a new grip ring for the spindle because the slipping will prevent the disc from getting up to speed in the crucial first few seconds to read the TOC (on discs w/ TOC).

You can find one here.....

I think this might be the issue as well.

Thanks every one, I'll place and order quickly. 24 years sounds right, I've had several players including an old CED player but still like the 703.

There is a capacitor C493 that is 1000uf 16V on the mainboard that seems to go bad in 703 and 704 units. It is the largest capacitor toward the front. It will also blow the ICP-N5 fuse on the board closer the the outside. This powers a video IC and some other stuff that is not used when playing CD’s. CD playback only requires the digital audio section to track the CD. LD requires the video signal path to track. You only see this problem playing LD’s.

This scenario is only valid when CD’s play fine and LD’s spin up but never lock in and play.
