Maybe more like 26 years; the 703 came out in 1994  . In any case, it sounds like the mechanics of the machine based on what you described sounds fine (a bad belt would usually not allow the clamper to lock down on an LD and thus the laser wouldn't even move). However, how about any squeal or slipping noises when it attempts to spin up an LD? If so, you probably need to clean (alcohol and a swab) or get a new grip ring for the spindle because the slipping will prevent the disc from getting up to speed in the crucial first few seconds to read the TOC (on discs w/ TOC).
