Tubes can look funny if they are out of calibration on some level and a smear look could be some alignment in the yoke. My mom used to have this awful 13" Sanyo that had at least one color bleed out that created what looked liked a smear effect (also had terrible pitch size that made it hard to discern fine detail). For CRT rear projection, a smear like affect is very common when the convergence is off but this is not really a huge issue as long as one is aware of how to access the convergence settings to realign it (even better w/ later models that had 64 and 72 point convergence to cover the entire screen). As for discoloration on a corner, this is due to a magnetic field (usually an un-shielded speaker) getting too close. This can sometimes be fixed by using a degausing coil (or even a VHS tape eraser) and waving it in front of the tube in a circular motion with the TV on to clear it out. However, if it's really been pulled too much by the magnetic field, it can be permanently damaged and nothing will fix it. Moving on to the "fat tube" descriptor, I guess we can assume the author meant a deep tube (or not). In any case, CRT's were already getting more shallow in depth starting around 1984 when Mitsubishi introduced the first 35" tube TV. This had to be done since the greatest limitation to selling these heavy suckers would be the width of a doorway and you don't want to limit how many of these can be sold if you want to attain economies of scale to lower the cost over time. Anyway... sorry if I'm sounding like the Cliff Claven of lddb.com .

SwZtNbwbzMDegausser Degaussing Wand Coil for CRT Tube Arcade Monitors Television If you use CRTs and plan to move them even not near speakers then you need one of these. You can also use them to magnetize your screwdrivers too. I used a tape eraser to do the same when I used them back in the day.

"Fat Tube TVs"? Love to know what would constitute a tube TV that isn't fat? I guess one of those old B/W Predicta TVs would be, right? Then again I did mess with some of the newbs on the Laserdisc Forever group on FB, when someone asked "What do you do to get a better LD picture on your flatscreen TV?" I responded, "Well, if you're using a Sony WEGA or Panasonic TAU TV, which are technically 'flatscreen TVs' just plug in the LD player with a composite cable and enjoy." I enjoyed the responses of "THAT'S NOT A FLATSCREEN TV YOU MORON!!!"--and then pointed out that the screens of these CRTs are flat, "therefore it is a flatscreen TV." I could tell their heads were exploding all over their iPhones.
