Hello everyone! Long time listener, first time caller. I have a Pioneer CLD-3090 that I'm having problems with playing side 1 of a disc. When it starts up, there is what it sounds like a clicking noise as the laser pickup unit aligns itself. There are what appears crossover lines going from left to right, and the audio is distorted. When the laser pickup moves towards the end of the side 1, it has problems and is not able to "flip" on its own, not because the alpha mechanism doesn't work - it actually does if you push the "Side B" button. As side 1 ends, it appears like the video gets completely distorted - it almost looks like the old analog TVs when you had to manually adjust the signal.

Hope someone can help me. Just wondering if I need a whole new laser pickup unit or is there other alignment/adjustment I need to make.

Thanks in advance for your help.

JP

Can the unit play a CD?

My understanding is that this is a good first step to determine if the player might have an alignment issue. If it plays, the centering of the mechanism should be fine and now you'll have to determine what other issue might be the cause. In any case, someone on the site with more knowledge than me will probably be posting shortly to help you out. ;)

Did you buy it this way or did it used to play fine and you now have issues? If you just bought it I'd return it. Someone would have to try to perform a complete alignment as either the laser is way out of alignment or the laser needs replacement.

Thank you everyone for willing to help. I bought this machine a while back, maybe 3-4 years ago at a yard sale. The owner said he didn't know much about it as it was his dad's player. I just couldn't help myself and bought it for $20 or $25 I believe, so it's been sitting in my basement for a while. Yesterday it was really the first time I decided to look at it since I've been downsizing a bit.

That said, I tested it with a CD this morning, and it played flawlessly - no problems scanning forward or backwards, within a second it started playing the track. With an LD, all of side A is distorted. Now there is no audio coming out, just crackling. The disc I'm testing "For The Boys" starring Bette Midler, has digital audio, but I'm only testing it with the analog audio directly plugged into my 50" plasma TV.

I've attached pictures of the opening 20th Century Fox logo and the beginning of the credits. Also, when I push the "Side B" button to play, it does sound a little rough when the alpha mechanism rotates but I know that most likely, I need to replace the belt. Anyway, Side B plays fine, both audio and sound. I've also flipped the disc to start playing Side B first and the same problem occurs with the distorted audio/video, so I know it's not the disc.

20 minutes into Side A, and still no sound - video quality still terrible. If I try to advance using either a remote or the chapter skip, the laser pickup tries to move to that position. After a few seconds, it stops completely, so chapter scanning is also off.

This is definitely an odd issue.

It plays CD's fine (which is always Side A) but LD playback on Side A is just crap but B is nearly perfect. I would assume nothing electronic is messed up since B looks great. Thus, I'm thinking it could be some additional mechanical adjustment just for the A side.

That's what I'm thinking ldfan -- really odd. I tried playing "Escape from New York" widescreen edition with similar results. With this latter disc, when playing Side A, there's lots of crosstalk again, no audio coming out. Once again, side B plays fine but I do notice some crosstalk and if I try to scan to a chapter (on Side B), it was unable to find it and returned to the same spot where it was before. Another thing I noticed with this disc is that the closed captions are on by default. I believe the laser pickup unit is probably misaligned but not sure how to fix it. I'll let the experts weigh in.

Thanks again!

Yup, I tested both discs with my CLD-D406 player and both discs play flawlessly, so definitely it's the CLD-3090.

Do you mean the CD played fine but now there is also crackling from CDs?

The audio distortion is only happening with laserdiscs. CDs are playing fine. Originally when I made the comment about "crackling" I thought the LD audio seemed fine, but perhaps I was mistaken. It was always distorted.

I'm stumped at the moment as to what could be causing this issue. To reiterate, the laserdisc video distortion is worse on Side A, no audio coming out or very distorted. Side B video is better - still some crosstalk, laserdisc audio seems OK.

As far as CD, the audio plays fine (which is always on Side A).

The pictures are crosstalk issues, can be alignment or the laser going bad. You have to perform the alignment to see it the picture can be cleared. If the laser is going out you’ll never get a clean picture.

Thanks Kurtis I knew you would chime in with an expert response.

I've never done this, my understanding is that with older Pioneer models like the CLD-3090 the alignment could be performed by a user but I'm not sure what to do exactly?

TIA again!

The manuals section here has the service manual. You need to go there and look at the adjustment pages and see if you can do it. It does require test equipment.
