I've heard rumor that there was once a portable LD player. Portable is subjective, as it couldn't really be made small.

RVs and small Yachts often had 12v electrical systems back in the day. There were 12v TVs and 12v VCRs.

Does anyone know a model number or something of a portable/12v LD player? Or confirm that they ever saw one?

Just a curiosity...

Never saw one except in a show car in a German car magazine (posted here once) which probably was uninstalled soon after the photo shoot. It seems ridiculous since motion would eventually wreck any player I’ve ever seen. Also, if one were that well off they could afford a 100V system to power any player. I would recommend VHS/Beta to those customers.

Portable and mobile eventually became very different terms. Portable means it’s meant to take (port) from one place to another. A portable TV from the 70s just meant that it had a handle on top and maybe a cart to wheel it from the dining room to the bedroom. Battery power also, maybe. LD players are pretty much all portable by this definition.

Mobile stuff is like the Walkman and later where your expected to use it while in motion. This combined with LD...horrible idea. The g-forces on the disc are pretty significant so if one were to drive up and down hills and around corners...you’d need one hell of a platter to keep it straight. Even with CD and the best Sony Discman units from the glory days you still have the issue of the disc flexing end rubbing on the insides of the deck as it plays.

I’m sure Pioneer worked on it, they worked on everything imaginable, but also I’m pretty sure they never released anything.

There were several 'component' assemblies, and players built into 'boom boxes'.

That's more of a bookshelf unit with detachable speakers rather than a "true" boombox.

Yeah, portable but not mobile. I’m pretty sure it’s AC only. If not, I’d love to see the battery that could power it for an entire movie. :)

like i said, the term portable is "subjective". Don't get hung up on the semantics of terminology. Or if it would "work in a 4x4 while driving". The units i am talking about, would have been for RVs or Yachts. Not designed to work while in motion. I've seen 12v TVs and 12v VCRs.

Yes, some RVs and Yachts had/have inverters (120v in USA). Growing up, my best friend's parents had a small yacht. It _did not_ have an inverter, and everything was 12v. They had a small 12v TV and 12v VCR https://www.ebay.com/itm/Clarion-VDH910-Car-12-volt-VHS-HI-FI-VCR-NEW-IN-BOX-with-Manual-and-Accessories/293698955304

I heard from someone else, that a 12v LD player was also made, i am interested in knowing the model number(s).

The "key" element of the "portable" moniker i am interested in, is the ability to be powered by a 12v power source (such as an RV or Yacht).

Thanks. The person i heard from, may have been thinking of something like this, for sure. Unfortunately, looks like this unit is powered by line voltages.

The Pioneer V2800 is considered a "portable" model as it was intended for business people to tote around showing business themed LDs. Portable in the fact that it is just a little wider than a 12" LD.

Doesn't have DC power though like OP is looking for though.
