If I were to try to make a list of best laserdisc players it would be 1) Sony HIL-2CEX 2) Pioneer HLD-X9 3) Sony HIL-C1 4) Pioneer CLD-99 5) Ruco LJR II (THX certification) 6) McIntosh MLD-7020 The thing is there is a lot of irrational exuberance over the LD-S9 because of some belief in the inadequacy of the CLD-99. I could have saved some money if I had bought the CLD-99. What does seam reasonable is that - the THX certification is not as important as the Y/C filter (luminence/chroma), which is what produces the s-video output. The HLD-X9 and the LD-S9 certainly have this. Since it ends with a "...9" I bet the CLD-99 does too. The McIntosh MLD-7020 does not have AC-3 and is supposed to be very nearly a Pioneer CLD-97. The LD-S9 is Japanese market only. I have one and am not ashamed, but I feel I was pressured into a choice that is 3X the price of a CLD-99 which is the American staple for enthusiasts. Also, note the CLD-D99 is the European version of the CLD-99. Very few titles were issued in Hi-vision. If there were even an original edit or something I knew about, I'd say it. The Sony players are much more rare than the Pioneer ones. I'd lean towards them because of the Sony Live after Death issue, it is described as "laser vision." To be more careful than that VHD - JVC laser vision - Sony (this is where digital sound was introduced) laserdisc - Pioneer laser hi vision - Sony (muse disc)

The CLD-99 isn’t highly regarded because after using a CLD-97 it feels like a downgrade. The 99 is a flimsy deck compared to the 97, rattles, not as reliable, etc. My best deck currently is a 99 so I’m not rubbishng it, just being honest.
When it comes to LD, Sony can jump in a lake as far as I’m concerned.
Sony has little to nothing to do with Digital Sound on LD or the names Laservision or Laserdisc. That was Phillips/Pioneer, etc. I can’t think of a single Sony LD innovation but I’m sure there was one. They have a lot of patents and make a lot of chips but they were a very distant third in LD behind Pioneer and Panasonic for multiple reasons.
THX certification is totally irrelevant.
Maiden rules.

Own or have owned: LD-V4400, LD-V8000, CLD-980, CLD-52, CLD-79 CLD-95, LD-W1, HLD-X9, HLD-V700, HIL-C2EX, HIL-C1, LX-HD10, HLD-1000, CLD-R5, CLD-R7G, CLD-959,CLD-704,DVL-91, CLD-406,CLD-S201. May have missed a couple players. Currently spinning with HIL-C2EX as my main player, the side change is wicked fast and PQ is great through Lumagen/eval board.

The 7020 did get AC-3 on their later models. I believe the player was produced between '95 and '98. The earlier gold model does not have AC-3. I have a plain black one and it was manufactured in '96 and has AC-3. I also have one from '98 and it has AC-3 as well so it was only those early models, but I have seen the regular black front 7020 with no AC-3. I was surprised to not see the S2 on your list!
